John Hancock made the world a better place in many ways. But he didn't make the world a better place by doing one thing…..he did many things. For example, he was a merchant, statesman and a prominent Patriot of the American Revolutionary War. He also served as president of the Second Continental Congress and was the first and third Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He was one of the most important patriots of the American Revolution. Today he is best known for his signature on the Declaration of Independence. John Hancock was born on January 23,1737 in Braintree Massachusetts. He died on October 8, 1793 in Hancock Manor. John Hancock had a father and a mother named John Hancock Jr and Mary Hawke Thaxter. His father was a Harvard graduate and a minister. John Hancock’s father died when he was seven. At the same age, he was adopted by his uncle, who was a Boston merchant and a very wealthy man at the time. Also because in 1776, he was the first to sign the Declaration of Independence(as said before). When he signed it, he left his “bold” and flourishing mark on American history. John Hancock was also in a secret underground organization called the Sons of Liberty. Matter a fact, he was their leader. This organization was founded by Hancock himself and Samuel Adams in July 1765. This was following the introduction of the Stamp Act. Their ship, the Liberty, got overrun by the British following the presentation of the Townshend Acts. The British were going to try to arrest Hancock but he avoided the arrest of the British because of Paul Revere.
