LOTF Symbolism The book, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, is about how a group of young schoolboys in the midst of a World War, end up on a deserted island after a plane crash. The changing nature of Piggy, who is a symbol of the voice of reason, evolves from being necessary to being killed and having the reason of the island go along with him. In the beginning of the novel, Piggy is described as plump "The fat boy lowered himself over the terrace and sat down carefully, using the edge as a seat"(10), nearsighted "He wiped his glasses and adjusted them on his button nose"(11), and asthmatic "I can't swim.
Peter Drucker once said “Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results not attributes”(BrainyQuote). Indeed, many leaders enjoy being popular. But popularity is not the most important trait in a leader; people should look at a leader’s results rather than his/her ability to speak. In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, many characters have the potential to be leaders. Yet, judging from his characteristics, Piggy would be the best candidate for leadership.
Why? “The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist.” (Golding 181) In chapter 11 the conch shatters and Piggy is run over by a rock. These events symbolize all hopes of civilization ending.
Due to this, Piggy should be blamed for the chaos and eventual destruction of the island because he is condescending and lazy. To begin, readers often consider Piggy as the voice of reason and intellect in the Lord of the Flies, but he comes across as condescending instead. Whether it be because of how he acts or what he does, he escalates situations and should be blamed for the chaos and the inevitable destruction of the island. For example, Piggy confronted Jack’s tribe and said, “Which is better–to be a pack of painted Indians like you are, or to be sensible like Ralph is?”
Throughout the novel Piggy was known for his intelligence and civilized manner who gave wise decisions through the voice of Ralph. “He’s like Piggy. He says things like Piggy. He isn’t a proper chief” (Golding 126).

The Lord Of The Flies by William Golding is a book about a plane full of boys crashing on an island. The boys are by themselves no adults so they have to survive on their own and establish their own government. Piggy is one of the first characters we meet as a boy with poor eyesight, a weight problem and asthma so the readers already like him even if no one else likes him. Piggy is the closest thing the boys have to an adult on the island. Throughout the story Piggy embraces the character traits of being intellectually intelligent, Mature and loyal.
Piggy is one of the first characters we meet when we start reading the Lord of the Flies. When he is described to us, the author writes that he wears glasses and his “specs” symbolize the intelligence within the group of boys. We can notice that Piggy is the only boy in the group who needs to wear glasses similarly he also seems to be the one who has all the good ideas although he is not always given credit for them. Piggy is technically the one who brings the boys together because he tells Ralph to blow in the conch, although Ralph basically takes the credit for it. The glasses also represent Piggy’s clear mind, and practical thinking.
In the dialog above, it can be seen that Piggy join talk every time Ralph spoke. Although there is not much that he says but rather often. This makes jack a very pissed off and want to bully Piggy. If seen by Jack when he said Piggy too much talk shows his negative action because he felt upset against Piggy. In the novel The Lord of the Flies, Piggy represents a hero in many different ways. Other than the fact that he stands up, not only for himself, but also for others that may be vulnerable or weak (personality wise). These are the actions of a true hero. Of course this is entirely optional and may be debatable by others. Unfortunately Piggy couldn’t live to the end; although he deserved to get off the island the most, out of all other characters.
In Lord of the Flies, Piggy is the character who represents the scientific, rational side of civilization. He stays civilized, and consistently scolds the other boys for behaving as savages. In the novel Piggy is the closest thing to an adult on the island, defending the conch and insisting on rules and order. When the boys first gather on the island, Piggy talks about how it is important to have rules.
Expert power offers people comfort with decisions made by the leader since the leader has prior knowledge when making choices. In my personal opinion, Piggy is the most important character of William Golding’s book Lord of the Flies because he is what connects everything including the main characters of the book like Jack, Ralph, Simon, Samneric, and Roger. Without Piggy, the whole story would be different because Jack had a big hatred for Ralph for two reasons. The first reason is because he was jealous that Ralph was chief and that he wasn’t and the second reason was that he felt like Ralph favored Piggy more than him and the others. Piggy is very significant to this book because he has three major traits (which are being intelligent, having a weight problem , and being an outcast) and without these traits the author may not have been able to make the story intense
