World War II seemed close to an end in May of 1945 and Japan was not down yet, and still fighting. America faced a hard decision: how to send the war against Japan as quickly as possible and with the least casualties possible. Since 1939, America had been working on the Manhattan Project, a project aiming to create nuclear bombs. A single bomb could destroy an entire city and America yielded that power against Japan. Using incendiary bombs, 67 entire sections of Japanese cities were burnt out.
The Manhattan Project: An Everlasting Legacy On December 7, 1941, Japanese soldiers flew over a naval base in Hawaii, known as Pearl Harbor. In the attack, more than 2,400 people were killed, including civilians and soldiers. As a result of this attack, the United States ended up in a war they had no intention of being in. The Manhattan Project was a way to retaliate against Japan for forcing them into World War II. After Japan attacked, the United States knew that they had to do something in order to make sure the Japanese did not win the war.
The bombing sites caused instant death, but they also caused cancer, burns, and radiation poisoning all from the radiation given off from the explosions. When America bombed Japan using the atomic bombs they did not know the long term effects of the bombs. The bombing sites are still uninhabitable to this day. Morally the atomic bombs were not the right option.
At the end of World War II, America proposed the Potsdam Ultimatum to Japan. It was a choice of unconditional surrender or ultimate destruction, but Japan did not accept it. In August of 1942, the United States government began a top secret project called the “Manhattan Project,” designed to create a super weapon like none ever seen before. The bombs produced by this project were originally for use against Germany.. Just 3 years later, America used the two atomic bombs they created to fulfill their promise of destruction in Japan, dropping the devastating bombs in August of 1945.
The Manhattan Project became one of the largest weapon development programs in history. General Leslie R. Had it been my decision to bomb these japanese cities, history would remain unchanged, meaning I would have chose to bomb Japan.
