If the schools started later in the day absences would drop. Students being late is a big problem in their grades. Kids wake up early in the morning because sometimes their schools start early. When they wake up early in the morning their body still says that it is time to sleep. If we have classes that are later than kids will attend school more and get more sleep.
In Pros and Cons of Later School Start Times by Leigh Ann Morgan, the author informs the reader that “...AAA says that drowsiness contributes to more than 100,000 crashes per year.” Starting later would lessen this amount by ensuring that students have more time to sleep, therefore helping to prevent drowsiness. The main purpose of school is to help students grow in their abilities, however, sleep-deprived students may find this impossible to do so. Sleep Deprivation and Teens: ‘Walking Zombies’ by Valerie Strauss notes that “a mere one-hour nightly loss of sleep was equivalent to the loss of two years of cognitive maturation…” Students are not able to learn and function as well as they would be able to when given enough time for sleep.
Benjamin Franklin wrote, ¨Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.” However, this saying does not apply to teenagers and the time they start school. High schools should start later for many reasons. Despite the fact that some people may argue that start times may impact student extracurriculars, high schools should start later because it improves grades, reduces health problems, and decreases the risk of teens driving while tired. Some people may think that high schools should not start later because later start times may interfere with student extracurriculars.
When kids are tired, their grades are usually worse than other kids. They don’t think straight or they just mess up. It would be better if school just started after 8:30. There are studies that early is better too. But there are more for later being better.
Why Should School Start Later Sleeping is important for kids that are in middle school because they have to wake up early to go to school. I believe school should start at a later time such as 9 o’clock in the morning. Three reasons why school should start later is because, kids are not sleeping enough hours during the night, kids may not have enough time to eat breakfast and if kids are tired and hungry they tend to be less productive in class. As a matter of fact if school started at a later time kids would be able to eat a healthy breakfast, be more productive in school and have a good night sleep. Why are kids not sleeping enough hours at night before going to school?
Starting school later can actually improve your learning, health and even your attitude and all of that can be changed by just starting school at 8:30AM. Kids don't start taking in information until 8:30AM because that is when the brain starts to really work. According to National sleep foundation ¨ teenagers are naturally inclined to stay up later and get up later in the morning.¨ ¨Starting school at 8:30 improves a student's chance of success,¨ according to the (National sleep foundation). Not only do teens want to sleep more, but sleeping more actually improves their health.
GY-13 Clarke can be a better place with later start times We all know this; waking up to a blaring alarm or an annoyed parent. You try to bury yourself in sheets and protect yourself from the harsh light. You drag yourself out of bed with hair blown to one side of your head.
Jon’s essay on having a later start time for school was very compelling. I agree with him, start times should be later. His most compelling evidence was the paragraph where he cited studies from the American Psychological Association. He writes: “Studies from the American Psychological Association show that the frontal lobe is still developing in many adolescentes. Disturbing REM sleep can slow the development [of this] portion of the brain.”
School days should start later for junior high and high school Students because it can cause problems for teens. Doctors have figured out during the ages 13-18; students bodies start to release a chemical in the brain that causes them not to able to go to sleep at times before eleven o’ clock. Which can cause a numerous problems with health which can effect students especially at school .They also found out during theses age groups they need nine to nine and a half hour of sleep to be able to function in school; 60% to 70% of teens in America suffer from Sleep deprivation which can cause heart disease, diabetes, strike, and heart failure ,ect.
Many times in my life, I have overslept or just didn’t want to wake up and missed the bus to go to school. I can guarantee that everyone has had this experience and it isn’t an unusual thing. The school makes you stay up late to study and wake up early to go to school, but the thing is you won’t be able to focus for the whole day. I think schools should start later in the day because it can improve health, better choices, and even grades. Therefore schools should push the time that school starts.
I found your post very interesting. I had never heard that the later start time could cut down on car accidents that much, even without the academic stuff that is a good reason to move the start time. I have heard of research into the academic side of this topic before and always wondered why schools didn’t take it into account and start later. I see no benefit to making teenagers get up early when it is actually negatively affecting their learning. I have read other research that stated that teenagers need the most sleep out of any age group and that it is important to their development that they get that sleep.
According to the National Sleep Foundation, a nonprofit organization that promotes public understanding of sleep and sleep disorders, starting school later is an adequate way for students to have a better memory, behavior, attention, mood, and executive function. The National Sleep Foundation states “, A National Sleep Foundation poll reported that 28% of teenagers have fallen asleep in class at least once due to lack of sleep. Negative effects of sleep loss include impairments in mood, attention, memory, behavior and executive function… increase in caffeine use… sleep deprived-teens at higher risk of car accidents.” This means that by just adjusting the time by an hour students are more aware of their surroundings, more focused on what they’re learning, have a better mood, and executive function, and it reduces the amount of sugary snacks they have eat or drink to stay awake.
When the alarm clocks goes off every day, students everywhere groggily get reading for school. Sally like most of her classmates gets up at 5:50am in the morning, so she could get to school on time which starts at 7:05am. Her classmates and herself are like zombies the whole day, for they are running off very little sleep. Starting school later is when schools start at a later time. So students get to sleep more in the morning.
Many people argue whether school start times should stay the same or become later in the day. Most students already don't get enough sleep during the night and that can affect their learning experience in school (Wahlstrom). However some positive effects can still come from waking up early in the morning and getting to school around the same time. Although good can come from waking up early in the morning and sleeping in, students still need later school starting times to improve their overall health.
Starting and ending school later in the day is a topic that teenagers, parents, and teachers have argued over for some time. Most teenagers complain that they can 't concentrate in class for falling asleep because of how early they are forced to wake up in the mornings. Many parents complain that students going any later would interfere with their work schedules, and most teachers, although they would love extra sleep in the mornings, have families and responsibilities at home to tend to and can 't be kept at school all day. As a teenager, personally, although I 'd love to sleep in every morning, think that going to school later and coming home later just isn 't a good idea. When I say that it isn 't a good idea, I am considering all the kids who work, play sports or attend other extracurricular activities, etc.
