Why Study Pluto

493 Words2 Pages

Which planet should we study? In space there are many galaxies. In our galaxy, the Milky Way Galaxy we have the Solar System. The Solar System is made of 8 planets, not including Pluto because we are not sure if it counts. There is also the Sun and many, many moons that revolve around planets. Also in our Solar System there is the asteroid belt and much much more. We are currently trying to study all of the planets by sending an AI. But we need to start focusing on one planet, and that planet I believe should be Pluto. The planet Pluto, is not actually considered a planet. Since it is so small and is two-thirds of Earth’s moon diameter it is better known as a dwarf planet. This dwarf planet is thought to be known as having little, or no magnetic field, since it is small and has a slow rotation. There are no found rings around Pluto, but there are five moons, Charon being the largest. The dwarf planet’s orbit is in an oval shape, like a race track around the sun. Pluto is very cold, considering it is billions of miles away from the sun. To study this dwarf planet, there has only been one mission, “New Horizons” …show more content…

The one mission sent to Pluto took about nine and a half years. Even using the fastest spacecraft that traveled about a million miles a day! If we sent a human, they would have to completely donate their life to researching and studying Pluto. Also we would probably have to use a bigger spacecraft to fit a human/s, and that could decrease the speed of the craft. That would make the trip even longer. So if we send an AI to Pluto, it would take approximately nine and a half years. Again using the fastest spacecraft ever leaving Earth. Unless, we could exactly predict and send the spacecraft so it catches Pluto when it is closest to the Sun. This option may take less time, but it is highly unlikely to
