Brutus was a patriot for what he did for his love of Rome and its people. Even though, the freedom of Rome and its people was why Brutus assassinated Caesar; others consider him a betrayer for he helped plan and carry out the assassination of Caesar. Brutus may seem like a betrayer to some because he helped plan and assassinate Caesar, his best friend. However, Brutus didn’t want to kill Caesar at first. Since he was not sure it was the right thing to do. He changed his mind after reading the letters that were planted by Cassius, which made it sound like the people of Rome wanted Caesar killed. Brutus said, “We’re all against what Caesar stands for, and there’s no blood in that. Oh, how I wish we could oppose Caesar’s spirit—his overblown ambition—and not hack up Caesar himself! But, unfortunately, Caesar has to bleed if we’re going to stop him,” shows that he did not want to, but thought he had to save Rome and its people. His love of Rome and its people came before that of his friend who he thought would turn if crowned. He did not want to see Rome change and people be slaves. Brutus shows his patriotism to Rome and it people when he promised justice will come by his hand: “Speak, strike, fix it!” Is this asking me to speak and strike? Oh, Rome, I promise you, if you’re meant to receive justice, you’ll receive it by my hand! Brutus said this in his speech, “Had you rather Caesar were living and die all slaves, than that Caesar were dead, to live all free men? As Caesar loved me, I weep for him.
