Why We Hate HR
Over many years, my extensive knowledge of retail management has accumulated, and is the catalyst that prompted me to earn a degree in Human Resource Management. While reflecting on my interaction with the HR department at the Ascena Retail Group in Mahwah, New Jersey, I decided that HR would be a great career change for me. As a result, I enrolled at Cal State Dominguez University to study Business management with a focus on Human Resources. Learning a great deal about, “the corporate HR,” while studying management courses has encouraged me to complete my degree. Mammond, and “ Why We Love to Hate HR…and What HR Can Do About It,” by Peter Cappelli, I am convinced of the disconnection that exists between HR and other segments of the business world. My understanding was confirmed by the author Peter Cappelli when he wrote the following, “HR is now in the position of trying to get those beleaguered managers to follow procedures and practices without having any direct power over them. This is euphemistically called “managing with ambiguous authority,” but to those on the receiving end, it feels like nagging and meddling”(57). In my experience, his statement is true to form. Cappelli, is expressing his insight and apprehension of the disconnection that exists between the business world and HR. Many examples of detachment occurred while I was working for Ascena Retail Group. Case in point, correspondence with the HR department at the store level was done by indirect conversations that started with me informing my district manager of an issue. Consequently, my district manager would translate the situation to Human Resources. Her rendition created two problems; the first dilemma was the annoyance of information being lost in translation due to a third party conveying the conversation. The second annoyance was working in a roundabout way with HR. Communicating indirectly was frustrating, and my perception of HR was, “HR is a secret organization that only senior management was allowed to communicate with.” So, the article “ Why We Love to Hate HR…and What HR Can Do About It,” hit me close to home because I recognize the annoyance with HR Peter Cappelli, is trying to get across to the
