Imagine a fourteen year old girl who had just been sexually assaulted and is now pregnant. Should she be forced to carry that child? The answer is no. Many women have unwanted pregnancies each year and it is a fundamental right whether or not they want to be pregnant. Abortion should be legal under any circumstance because if abortions are banned, there is a higher risk of physical and mental health problems for the women who was denied the abortion. It is the woman’s choice whether or not she wants to keep and raise a child. Most of the time, women choose abortion because they do not have the financial means for pregnancy and parenthood.
There is a high risk of mental and physical health issues for women who are denied abortions. Those who were denied an abortion felt regret, anger, and less relief and happiness. 95% of women who had abortions felt it was the right decision. When abortion is legal, it reduces the risk of women having mental health issues. Before abortion was legalized, women would often resort to at home abortions which involved using a coat hanger to remove the fetus. Pro-lifers say that abortion is murder but a fetus is not scientifically or legally a person. How can you kill something that technically isn’t alive? A fetus can’t feel pain during the abortion process. Since a fetus is not alive how would it be able to feel pain? The argument that abortion hurts the fetus is false. The risk of dying from abortion is 0.6 out of 100,000 while the risk of dying from childbirth is 8.8 out of 100,000. A woman’s risk of dying from giving birth is higher than the risk of dying from an abortion. Anyone who argues that abortion will kill a woman should know that it is more dangerous to give birth.
