Abortion has been a widely controversial topic that gets debated more each year. Many people believe that no matter what circumstance, an abortion is wrong. Others argue that it is the choice of the mother and should always be that way. For many, the Roe v. Wade court trial of 1973 brought a lot of attention to the topic. The decision was 7-2 in favor of choice, and a major turning point in the opinions of many. Although the Roe v. Wade case was a major turning point for others, some pro-life supporters still weren't swayed. “The American people are divided about the course this country has taken. However, it is also clear that Americans overwhelmingly believe that the government should not interfere with personal family decisions -especially decisions about life and death”(Remarks by senator Dianne Feinstein 1). A handful of Americans may not support what the government has done in the past. Nonetheless most would agree that under no circumstance should the government get involved with personal family matters such as abortion. An abortion is a very personal issue and should not be anyone's decision except for the family dealing with the pregnancy. Abortion is legal in the United States today, and people frequently support the rights to receive one. “71% of California voters support maintaining the current level of access to abortion services, or lessening restrictions. So do a majority of Americans”(Alters 1). Members of the population support having the same if not more access to abortions. If the mother has gone through a traumatic experience such as rape, having a child is a crude reminder of that tough incident. “Women who receive abortions are less likely to suffer mental health problems than women denied abortions”(ProCon.org 2). In cases such as these an abortion is necessary to preserve the mental health of the mother. Although you can never undo rape, the mother should never have to deal with the constant reminder that pregnancy bears. A large reason mothers receive abortions is that their financial status is not capable of supporting another human, especially a child. “Many women who choose abortions don't have the financial resources to support a child”(ProCon.org 3). Someone should not be put in the wrong if their financial status isn’t enough to support a child. They should not be punished by the government or pro life groups but rather aided in their situation. If having the baby puts you below the poverty line or on public welfare you have to question if the baby is worth being born into that life. If the pregnancy compromises the mother enough to the point of mental or financial health then having an abortion may be the best option to counter these issues.
