I’m a strong believer that young children should be limited from engaging in violent video games. It’s scientifically proven that the portion of the brain that controls judgment is not fully developed until a person’s mid-20’s, leaving young children, and even teenagers, impressionable. Knowing this, why would a parent allow violent video games, such as Call of Duty or Grand Theft Auto, to fall into the hands of their children? They see and take part in virtual murders, crimes, and drug consumption and are easily brainwashed into thinking these behaviors are acceptable. At the very least, they are desensitized to the violent and illegal nature of these video games.
Music, books, and board games became the target for the media to pin on ruining the moral fiber of youth. It creates a parallel to what video games are currently going through. It inspires a sympathetic emotion to the enjoyments of our past, that we see as harmless now. Just because it is influential to a younger demographic, doesn't mean that it will cause our moralities to become susceptible to dramatic changes. Christopher Ferguson provided a great argument toward the controversy behind violent video games and heightened aggressive behavior.
New Media is a field of constant evolution and change. The opportunities for argument creation and advancement shift and flow with the advent of new mediums of media and communication. Modern day mediums constantly advance in vie for their legitimacy. In 2011, the Smithsonian American Art Museum hosted the exhibit The Art of Videogames providing insight to the public of the expressive power intrinsic to the field . Videogames are said to make arguments, and allow unique forms of communication, yet most studies apply dated descriptive processes to this study.
So everyone knows what video game is, a game played by electronically manipulating images produced by a computer program on a television screen or other display screen. Do you not have many misconceptions about video games like “they are for kids, they do not require team work, they are all the same or nothing good ever comes out of video games” (The Crap Gamer,1). People have looked at video games that way for a long time, and no it’s not bad to look at them like that because anyone can misjudge anything by it’s cover. Should we be so judgment about it, no because games are part of our society and they just keep getting better better. But enough of being so pushy about video games, I would like to share a new view towards video games as a discourse community.
According to ProCon.org “Violent video games have been blamed for school shootings. It also increases in bullying and violence towards women”(Do Violent Video). Some parents think games like Grand Theft Auto are violent for kids because it gives kids bad ideas. Some parents still buy the games for their kids even though there's an age restriction. Violent video games don't make people more violent in real life because there is no proof of people killing people over a video game, no one has shot up a school because of a video game, and parents are responsible for their child.
Are video-games a sport? In recent years a pressing topic that has surfaced, especially among parents to children involved in such activities. I am of the belief that they are as real of a sport as football and hockey and that professional gamers should for all intents and purposes be considered athletes. And I write this in hopes of convincing even the most stubborn of reader that video games are, in fact, a sport.
I agree with Johnson’s point because many gamers left confused. Even when they are not playing video games, their brain is constantly thinking about the
It supports the argument because it is just as hard to create a campaign for a game as it is to create a movie. And maybe even harder with games that let you choose your own path of the game “It may seem like a lot of pressure to not only come up with a refreshed look for one of the biggest characters in gaming but also create a new group of enemies from scratch” Gabriel Garza. Gabriel Garza is talking about how difficult it is to create all the new mobs with new challenges. With all that on their back, they also have to please all the players(which is impossible). Just like any other movie, game developers have to create the personality of each character.
So the argument against censoring video games is valid. Paintings, sculptures, prints, installations, drawings, and photography are all considered protected speech under the First Amendment. Even so, conflict arises based on objections to the religious, sexual/nudity, or political content of the artwork (Visual Art,
Violent video games have been blamed for everything from bullying to school shootings. Critics of these video games believe they cause people to commit violent acts in real life. These critics, mainly comprised of parents and other responsible adults, don’t agree with what the video games portray. Others say the video games cause less violence and are an outlet for anger and stress. Although violent video games have violent actions in them, teenagers should be able to play violent video games because there isn’t enough evidence to prove they make teens more aggressive, it could prevent violence, and violent video games are a fun and relaxing way to relieve stress and anger.
The cause of violent action in the real world are not caused by violent video games. Violent video games have been around since 1976. There was a rating system put into place to let people know what was in the game they were buying. There is research and studies that prove violent video games have nothing to do with crimes all around the world. Even though there are people and politicians who believe that violent video games lead to violent behavior, the research and studies show that that is not the
Another form of art that some feel should be censored is some novels that are out there like Catcher and the Rye, Harry Potter series, and To Kill a MockingBird again this is just to name a few that are out there. People for censorship mainly want it as a way of protecting their kids and to protect the people who can’t handle those types of art. The main reason for that is people are sometimes afraid that if people play, watch, or see these works they might make them snap and try and imitate what they’ve seen or read in real life. A new research American Psychological Association (APA) has shown that children and young adults who play first person shooter games have been more prone to aggression but not necessarily criminal activity. The same can be said for racy novels that depict killing and
Should we allow this art in our museums or in our schools? That is what authors Beisel, Dunkel, and Kristol are each discussing and sharing in their works. Although they may each come to different conclusions as to whether or not art should be censored, they each use facts, studies, and personal examples, to show ethos, pathos, and logos, to prove their argument. These discussions about free expression and censorship all come down to an assessment of the values that society finds most important.
A recent content analysis by the research organization Children Now shows that a majority of video games include violence and about half of the violent incidents would result in serious injuries or death in the "real" world. Claim1 Research involving British primary schoolchildren found that the length of time young people spend playing games, rather than their content, could have an effect on their behavior or school performance. But it concluded that fears that generations of young people are growing up with their development impaired by exposure to violent video games are no more likely to be borne out than previous “moral panics” over television and other media. Playing one-player games is not always negative if you do it moderately.
Censorship of the arts is a highly debated and controversial subject that deals with what artistic content is deemed acceptable or unacceptable to the public in society, as well as the limitations of practicing artists’ rights to express themselves through art. In this regard, art should be a way to express one’s own opinions, but should not be used as a vessel for insensitive or malicious intent in dealing with topics such as race and religion. In this essay, I will be discussing this and two other reasons as to why artists should not be given absolute freedom in creating their artworks. These other reasons are that art may also cause controversy within society when dealing with topics unaccepted by conservative members of the public, such as political views that go against the norm, as well as shocking or, to some, disturbing content such as intense or extreme gore and nudity. While these are some reasons why art censorship can be justified, I will also be discussing a counter-argument to these reasons, which is that society should not shoot down views and opinions based solely on a minority that does not approve of them.
