Individuals shouldn’t be for statements made on social media because, “Words are just words (Campbell, 1992).” Firstly, hurting feels was never a crime. Everyone hurts everybody's feels, but it’s not worth going to court for it, as it’s proven by Sigmon, “The last time I checked, hurting someone’s feelings - even in real life - never justified criminal prosecution ( Sigmon, 2011).” If someone was to hurt a “victim” online, they don’t have to go court because he/she never hurt the “victim” physically. In the First Amendment, it is stated that you have the right to be cruel as you want, right up to the point of a libel or slander, according to Sigmon’s informational article.

Secondly, there are more major crimes, such as murder and theft, than cyberbullying. Why waste your time having to go to the courtroom because of cyberbullying? “Moreover, the idea that hurt feelings, justify criminal prosecution at all is an offensive use of the criminal justice to prosecute minor crimes, ultimately wasting judicial time and taxpayer resources (Sigmon, 2011).” Now you may think that it’s okay to cyberbully or bully in any other ways because you know that it’s a waste of time. You can’t make someone not express their feelings, they will one way or another. Meaning, if you told a baby not to cry, he/she still will cry. Sometimes people are most likely to express their feelings when they feel frustrated or angry.
