Every moment in our lives is significant. Whatever happens to us can be unforgettable, whether it’s from trauma, excitement, betrayal, or love there are things we simply can’t forget even if we wanted to. Some people use photos to keep track of the good; others write to keep track of both the bad and the good. William Shakespeare wrote a series of sonnets that documented his emotions and experiences. By using rhyme scheme Shakespeare is able to add rhythm with a bit of a twist in his sonnets. By making the ends of his sentences rhyme he was able to create sonnets that kept the reader interested. Shakespeare was born in “Stratford-upon-Avon” in “April”, as he grew up; he enjoyed his childhood living “a comfortable middle-class life”(Mazzeno). Shakespeare started his career by selling his precious creations and making his mark in the world of theater. In many of his poems Shakespeare refers to an older woman, and many people believe he is talking about his wife. “In 1582, Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway, a woman eight years older than he.” (Mazzeno). William Shakespeare had three children, whom he later left to continue his play-writing career. “By 1610, it appears he had tired of London life. Evidence indicates that in that year he returned to Stratford-upon-Avon, where he enjoyed a life of active retirement. He continued to work on various dramatic productions, collaborating with younger playwrights on a number of scripts. He died at his home in Stratford-upon-Avon on April 23, 1616, and was buried there two days later” (Mazzeno). Trying to cope with the death of a loved friend is one of the hardest things a person can attempt to do. The reader might be able to relate to Shakespeare’s feeling of regret. When writing this poem he kept on mentioning things of the past, likely because it was all he could think about. It’s as if the idea of death was in his mind and stuck on repeat. During the time he couldn’t stop thinking of what could have been, Shakespeare was temporarily blinded of his surroundings. The significance of the ideas of nostalgia, sadness, and grief is to get the reader to understand how deep his appreciation was for his friend. That one person made him feel happy and at ease, it must have crushed him to think of how it didn’t work out over and over again.
