“Artists should never look at pictures, but should stutter in a language of their own.” Winslow Homer was an extremely talented artist and is considered one of the best painters of the 19th century in America. He received little art education and yet he thrived as a mostly self-taught artist and prioritized the development of his own style. He worked in commercial illustrations for the first part of his life before deciding to live solely off the profits of his beautiful oil and watercolor works. Though he struggled financially during his life like most artists do, he is now widely recognized as one of the most acclaimed watercolor artists ever.

In my opinion I believe that Joshua Phillips’ life was dictated and shaped by his childhood upbringing. I believe this because violent homes greatly affect children’s mental health and the way they grow up. Children only reflect what adults decide to show them, so living in a house with a violent parent and experiencing domestic abuse is bound to result in some kind of changed behavior. Joshua Earl Patrick Phillips was born on March 17, 1984 in Allentown, Pennsylvania to Steve and Melissa Phillips.
Though not much is known about Homer and the life that he lived, he is credited with writing down two of the most epic stories, the Iliad and the Odyssey. Homer, a sort of mystical person, some scholars believe him to be one person while others think that these iconic tales were created by a group of individuals. The reason for this is that storytelling was considered an oral tradition, Homer was credited with the tales, reciting them from memory.
