Wonder by R.J. Palacio, teaches students that it is perfectly fine to be different and everyone can overcome anything. August Pullman, a ten-year-old boy struggling with Treacher Collin Syndrome causing his face to appear abnormal. August has had this defect since we was born and he had been home-schooled up until he was in the fifth grade. August had difficulty making friends because of this reason. He knew that he did not look normal and that people were always starring at him. He constantly kept his head down, mumbled when he talked, and never made eye contact. Throughout the school year, he made some friends along the way and started to not worry about what other people thought of him. He began to feel comfortable in his own skin and accepted himself for who he really was. When August overheard what Jack was telling his friends about August saying that he would kill himself if he looked like him, August just wanted to give up and quit school. Via convinces him to stay in school and ignore Jack. This changed August’s way of thinking. Before, he would just give up and quit, but now he controls the issue and does something about it. When Jack punched Julian in the face for insulting August, he then discovers that he has friends that would take up for him and he knew that he had someone to count on. Lastly, when August and his class goes on an overnight camping trip, he gets bullied by a bunch of seventh graders.
