World War I began in July 1914 in Serbia when Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated. The war was fought between the central powers (Austria-Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire) and the allied powers (Serbia, Russia, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Belgium and the United States.) The war’s poisonous gas attacks resulted in the inhalation of chemical fumes that damaged the victim’s respiratory organs and killed many soldiers. Overtime gas masks advanced and became more effective as countries developed new warfare. 2. Chimney sweepers in the 1800s in England were usually poor orphan boys and young children who were sold to the chimney master. The job was to clean out soot and ash out of chimneys. Parliament passed the “Act for the regulation of Chimney Sweepers” in 1864, which caused the end of the boys being used to clean out the grime filled chimneys. 7.
