World War I, also known as the Great war, War to end all wars, and First World War, officially begun August 4, 1914. The war involved The Allies that include Britain, France, Russia, Italy, and the United States. These five countries fought against the Central Powers whom included Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria. The leaders of Germany and Austria-Hungary started the war. This war consisted of a long 4 years. The 28th day of June 1914, the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand occured in Sarajevo. He was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip. This one incident triggered a chain of events which led up to World War I. Franz Ferdinand was an Archduke of Austria-Este, Austro-Hungarian and Royal Prince of Hungary and of Bohemia and, from 1896 until his death, heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian throne. Soon after his assassination, Austria-Hungary threatened war on Serbia. On August 4th, 1914 Germany starts the war by invading Belgium. April 22nd, 1915 Germany fires shells filled with chlorine gas at Allied lines. For the first time in history a large amount of gas was used in battle. To be exact this happened September 15th, 1916 at Delville Wood. February 25th, 1917 the so-called Zimmermann Telegram was given to Wilson from British Intelligences. This was a message from German foreign secretary Arthur Zimmermann proposing that Mexico side with Germany in case of war between Germany and the United States. To return the favor Germany promises to return to Mexico the “lost provinces” of Texas and much of the rest of the American Southwest. Shockingly Mexico declines the offer. Due to this it outraged the American public which pushed their opinion to support entering the war. The United States enter the war April 6th,
