Richard the Lionheart is one of the most famous of kings, if not the most, in England and France. He was born on September 8, 1157 and died on April 6, 1199. He is mainly known for his part in the Third Crusade attempting to free Jerusalem from Muslim control. Although he had a large and important role in Medieval Europe, it is usually romanticized to increase the heroism of Richard. Richard’s prowess as a military leader, his benevolence and his sense of responsibility were all greatly exaggerated.
Two romantic heroes, a pirate and a knight, compete to be the best. Westley (the man in black), the pirate, and Sir Gawain the knight. Both on a journey, one on the journey of true love and the other on the journey to his “demise”. Eight ideals of knighthood: justice, generosity, sincerity, courtesy, charity, loyalty, boldness and temperance. Although both heros do an amazing job in demonstrating the eight ideals of knighthood one does it better as opposed to the other one, Westley surpasses Sir Gawain, from Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, by the pear poet, in being the best romantic hero.
Clear Chivalry: (A Discussion of Chivalry in King Arthur’s Story) In the days of King Arthur, there was something called “Chivalry”. It was something used by Knights to instill discipline and honor. These fearless knights were to follow a strict code of conduct. If they didn’t, they were not a true knight.
During the Medieval times chivalry was one of the most important characteristics a knight could display. Chivalry was viewed as a moral obligation that involved bravery, honor, respect, and gallantry. Knights were expected to uphold this code or face social consequences for any infractions, with punishments ranging from humiliation to termination of their knighthood. “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” presents the struggles knights faced with honoring the chivalrous code at all times. Sir Gawain, while imperfect, exhibits qualities expected of knights and embodies the internal struggle between honoring the chivalrous code and giving into selfish desires.

At age 26 he was given control of an army and was sent to maintain Carthaginian control over Iberia. He won the favor of all of his men by being: similar to his father, brave, simple in life, and willing to share the hardships of his men. Essay: Consider how the Theme of courage is treated in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. It has to be said that Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is arguably one of the greatest middle English poems of the 14th Century. The author of the text, whom, amazingly is still unknown tells the reader, through the medium of poem the courage of the Great Sir Gawain as he bravely challenges the Green Knight. The poem also shows the courage of others. In Medieval times and especially medieval writings, there was a great engrossment with courage.
In the story, the Green Knight says, “But the man who offers his life in this fashion is brave indeed, who dared to do what I have challenged you to do” (line 877-878). This quote highlights the bravery that Sir Gawain displays in accepting the challenge, as he is putting his life on the line. The bravery that Sir Gawain shows in this moment is a testament to the chivalry and heroism of knights during the medieval period.
Courage is a very important aspect of a knight’s life and is needed in the succession of knighthood. Gawain is a knight that possesses this and gives the reader an effective concrete picture to the theme of courage in the story. It answers my questions in the introduction, what is courage and what do you have to do to be courageous. It is simple really when you take into consideration Gawain’s experiences. Courage is not just about being brave in front of others or being fearful but standing up to them, it is about being courageous on the inside, using everything in your heart to achieve the unachievable and reaching goals you never thought you would ever reach.

During the reading a really good quote stood out and that is when Arthur says “You are too young to become a knight.” (1). Some may believe honesty is a very good trait to have. This scene is where William expresses his feelings about Jocelyn. The conversation is going perfectly until Adhemar comes and is also seated next to Jocelyn. This becomes awkward instantly as Adhemar tries to compliments Jocelyn. Brian Helgeland uses techniques like dialogue, costume,set design and camera angle to create the scene and tension between Jocelyn, Adhemar and William.

His life was always pushed into being a farmer but he wouldn't budge, he wanted to be very different.
