Dear Mrs. Knopp

During my time in Expository Writing this fall semester, I have had many opportunities to learn about and develop my writing skills. This class has opened my eyes to the reality that writing is hard, and is most definitely an art form. Writing is an art form that is rooted in consistency and style. I hope to show my newfound understanding and respect for writing throughout my writing in this portfolio.

This essay presented many more difficulties when compared to the previous two. It required me to totally immerse myself in an alien topic and become an expert on it. The informative essay reminded me to think about the sources I use since bias is everywhere. While writing this essay I had major difficulties with the organization of my points. Throughout my first draft, I was completely unsure about what the reader would actually be interested in, so I had a lot of unnecessary information. I had a classmate review my essay and point out the flaws and what is common knowledge with my topic, and what isn’t. I already knew that it takes multiple drafts to make a good paper, but what this specific paper taught me is that getting an outside person’s perspective is incredibly important when it comes to quality writing. Without an outside perspective, how are you ever going to know what your readers will think when it is published (or turned in)?

I went into the start of the semester with less respect for English and writing than for other subjects. My time in Expository Writing I made me grow in respect for writers. As part of our homework, we were told to read chapters from Alan and Bacon Guide to Writing, this book and the feedback on my essay drafts taught me that writing takes time and perseverance.
