Imagine a situation in which a report came out that a 17-year-old was arrested for the killing of his next-door neighbor with the use of a shotgun. The video explains how adolescents from different age groups were sentenced to different types of crime. Juvenile criminal systems are different from adult criminal systems because innocent or guilty isn’t involved in that type of case as the juvenile is still a minor. For the adult criminal system, the criminal who is an adult has the option to bond and has a right to a jury trial as well. The proper age to be charged as an adult is 17 years old.
The decision to try a juvenile as an adult varies drastically across the globe as each country or state has its own set of laws and principles regarding the approach taken to juveniles in the court system that differ from those of other countries (Juvenile Vs Adult). In countries like India and France, there are sometimes entirely separate courts (France’s being called Juvenile Assize) and certain amendments that allow for those aged 16-18 who have committed “heinous” offenses to be tried as adults (Singhl). Places such as Iran and the Middle East try everyone as though they are the same, so minors can receive equal trials and sentences as adults (Mostafaei). Considering there is a range of policy and court differences, and for the purposes
Should juveniles be charged as adults In the novel Monster, Steve is charged with the murder of Mr. Nesbit. When Steve is sixteen years old, he is tried as an adult. He is still in a time of development which is from twelve to seventeen years old. The same goes with many other juveniles guilty or not there are being tried as adults, and treated like them.
This, in part, is caused by adults directly telling them to commit a wrongdoing without thought of the consequences. This also ties in with abuse, in which most juveniles may simply not have a choice. All in all, juveniles should be tried for their age because they are not adults, but instead young individuals who can make a change in their behavior if they are given a second
The juvenile must be charged with a serious offense, has a lengthy juvenile record, past rehabilitation efforts have been unsuccessful, and youth services would have to work with the juvenile for a long time. Being tried as an adult has its advantages and disadvantages. The advantages being an adult jury may feel sorry for the juvenile and if the court has a lot of cases the juvenile case is more likely to get disposed and receive a lesser sentence. The disadvantages would be higher possibility of facing a more severe sentence, may have to serve in an adult prison, and adult criminal records are harder to seal than juvenile
Juveniles should be trialed as adults because they cannot commit more crime when they are in jail, hey cannot commit worse crimes, and itm is safer for the community. I think that juveniles who are under 18 should get trialed as adults. In 2012 the supreme court ruled that Juveniles under the age of 18 can not receive a life sentence or be put to death without parole (lauck). But what if some one under 18 committed a crime that a 23 year old committed why should one get life or be put to death while the other one gets a smack on the wrist and gets away scot free, the under aged person can be just as bad as someone who is over 18.
Why are juvenile being tried as an adult?Ever since 1990 and 2010 many juveniles have been tried as an adult and been sent to adult jails or prisons. Some minors are transferred from a juvenile facilities to the adult system but when they are transferred, juveniles must be separated from any adult inmate and not interact with them. However, some states either refuse to follow those laws or stated that they will comply only to stall on progress. Juveniles that are being held in the adult system at a young age can have a lot bad experience there. There might be some things that made a juvenile being tried as an adult like how they committed an act of violence,if one of their family member are in prison or jail and had maybe been influenced by them, how their background surrounding is,or the people they hang out with.
Minors are often immature when they commit horrendous crimes. Furthermore, they don't have an appropriate level of psychological understanding to make sound decisions. Trying juveniles as adults is wrong because juveniles are not mentally stable enough to understand that the decisions that they make can negatively impact their future, trying minors as adults hinders their growth as individuals and harms their productivity in the long run. Instead of juveniles being sentenced as adults for their criminal offenses, they should be obligated to participate in intervention programs. Juveniles don't have a fully developed mental stability to make sound decisions.
Elizabeth S. Scott, a professor at Columbia Law School indicate that adolescents may be more likely to get involved in criminal activities because of their tendency to look for risky behavior. This fact, combined with the influence of others, can distort the judgment of a child and make him do bad things even if, in other situations, he would not have done a crime. Also, drugs and alcohol are important to consider. Sometimes, a juvenile will consume those things with some friends to be accepted by them and this can influence his acts. Bearing this in mind, youths should not be tried as adults when they commit a
When you turn the age 18, you get freedom. You receive certain rights such as voting, the ability to purchase a house, the ability to purchase tobacco cigarettes at the local gas station, but most importantly to be held responsible for your actions. An 18-year-old is basically an adult in nearly every state of the United States. For most teens that’s a big deal. Also when teens turn 18 they will no longer be seen as kids in juvenile court.
Similarly, trying teens as adults will hold them accountable for their actions which will reduce the crime
The criminal justice system was created in order to punish people who choose to break the law. Some people believe they are above the law and decided to do whatever they like regardless of the consequences. Children and adults are both responsible for the actions they commit. The criminal justice should tried children as adults for committing felonies because a crime is a crime regardless of the age of the individual. This can be fulfilled by punishing juvelives with the correct sentence, by seeing that they know their actions lead to consequence and they have the proper process for a teen to be tried as adult.
Children as young as 14 can be tried as an adult for a harsh crime . If a young adult commits a crime they should be tried as an adult
In our society, crimes are being committed not only by adults but by juveniles as well. By law as soon as a person turns 18 they are considered to be an adult. So what if an adult and a juvenile were to commit the same crime yet were sentenced differently simply based on the fact that one is a child and one is an adult? Juveniles are committing violent crimes just as adults and should be given the equal treatment and sentencing as adults receive. Juveniles aren’t completely ignorant as everyone seems to think.
Can you imagine waking up behind closed walls and bars? Waking up to see your inmate who is a 45-year-old bank robber and you are a 14-year-old minor who made a big mistake. This is why minors who have committed crimes should not be treated the same as adults. Some reasons are because the consequences given to minors in adult court would impact a minor’s life in a negative way. If a minor is tried through a juvenile court, they have a greater chance of rehabilitation.
