Yu was born on December 16, 1902. She was the second daughter of her mother and father living in Cheonan, South Korea. Yu was raised Christian and taught to stand up for injustices by her father. Fast forward 17 years, March 1, 1919. Japan is infiltrating South Korea for rule, numerous South Koreans are in a panicked state, worrying for the future of their country. Koreans would protest by waving South Korea’s flag to the Japanese, signifying they were their own nation. Aggravated, Japan would result in open fire combat, in which Gwansun lost her parents due to getting shot. After these incidents, Yu could not let her parent’s lives go with nothing to show for herself. At just 16 years old, she continued the protests but this time with a bigger sense of purpose, she wanted to avenge her parents, along with many other strong men and women advocating for their country’s freedom. Everyday the Japanese soldiers would kill and imprison thousands of Koreans for their revolts, but Gwansun stood strong. Eventually, she was taken in and sentenced to 20 years in prison. During her jail time, the correctional officers would torture and torment her to teach her a lesson for disobeying their wants.
