In the 1960s the Americans were looking for a President who could fix the issues that Eisenhower had caused. The people of the United States wanted a President that would bring the country together and unite them through an active but productive leadership position. The Democrats introduced a candidate to the United States that they hoped would bring the country the united nation that they had been longing for. John Fitzgerald Kennedy’s campaign promised the American people the “New Frontier.” Kennedy was able to get approval for tariff reductions and wanted to cut taxes so within time he could create prosperity through economic growth.
From 1954 - 1968 the United States faced an essential event in its history called the African-American civil rights movement which occured to have equal rights for the african americans. When these events occurred there were leaders chosen for the african americans. A voice that spoke out in favor for them, and not only was there one but there was two. There names were Martin Luther King Jr (MLK) and Malcolm X.
The 1960’s and early 1970’s was a period when America was involved in many conflicts overseas, including the Vietnam War. This began a time when media spread quickly as well as influenced the public heavily and wars were first televised. These conflicts ultimately caused citizens to protest and question the motives of the federal government. A large number of these protestors were students who sought to combat problems through various tactics to get authority figures to remedy the problems they identified. Student protestors sought to combat many immediate and long-term problems involving this time period and the Vietnam War.
What We Really Miss About The 1950s In her essay, “What We Really Miss About the 1950s”, Stephany Coontz talks about the myth of the 1950s. She begins her argument by stating some reasons why the nostalgia for the 1950s exists. The main thing Americans miss about the those days is the stability. She acknowledges that this fallacy is not insane.
How did the events of the 1960 change American policing? The first major change that was development in 1960 's was an academic establishment. This had a direct impact of how police management and administration looked at the scientific approach to police in today 's world. The 1960’s were also responsible for the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorder (1968).
During the 1960’s, the Civil Rights Movement was a big topic and controversy with all of the United States. It was quite clear that African Americans did not get treated the same way that whites did. It had been ruled that it was constitutional to be “separate but equal”, but African Americans always had less than the whites did. For example, the schools that they had were run down, and had very little classrooms, books, and buses. Martin Luther King had a large role in the Civil Rights Movement, as did Malcolm X, and others.
During the late 1950s and 1960s the southern states in America were segregated. Black and white people were separated from bathrooms to schools and therefore, blacks had to use their installments or they would be punished by whites. While this was happening, two African American men, Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, wanted segregation to come to an end. So they proclaimed their ideas and started to form groups to protest against segregation in America. Consequently, Martin Luther King Jr’s civil rights philosophy made the most sense during the 1960s because integrated schools was the goal, nonviolence could have a huge impact on the enemy and nonviolence was the only practical strategy.
From the late 1950s to the late 1960s civil for blacks in remained a burning topic in media and everyday life. Two of the most influential to the movement were Martin Luther King Jr., a preacher from Atlanta, and Malcolm X, an ex-convict from Lansing, Michigan. King, during this era, was most well-known for quite literally preaching for non-violent civil disobedience to create social change. Conversely, X vouched for a violent revolution, a sort of fight fire with fire for the time. For the 1960s however, the ideals of king would be much more advantageous to the cause of the African Americans; in that they had little to no respect towards them from whites and violence would only cause more disrespect, the violent protests would also end
From the previous century, the United States built rapidly regardless of their obstacles that went through their way. The conflict throughout Civil Rights was described as a battle, and was a sense of pure racism, a concept that was viewed as not important to some Americans. Many groups wanted to change America’s perspective of discrimination, human rights, and freedom. However during the 1960s, people who seeked for rights, damaged America with protests and riots that were intended to make America an equal nation. There were people in the United States that were in need of change, hoping for the country ro be ‘free’ as it should be in society.
Maya Angelou once said, “Prejudice is a burden that confuses the past, threatens the future and renders the present inaccessible.” She meant that when prejudice was a major issue in the past it can still threaten our future and leaves the present to the new generations. Leaves the prejudice, racism and current issue to us, lets us do the changing in the world. During the Civil Rights Movement during the 1960s people have been prejudice and have been changing the way the world was at the time. While doing this, racism was forming and more current issues started.
I can assume a common person in the 1960 would find information in a library. I think information literacy was despite the fact they did not have the technology like we have now days, it was something people would still have to learn to get accurate information. Newspapers, phone books, radio, library with tons of books and encyclopedias were also part of that era that started the necessity for inventors to create what we have today. Information literacy then and now I think it was the same practice just with the different tools.
The Sixties Scoop refers to the “scooping” or large scale removal of Indigenous children from their communities, homes, and families of birth through the 1960’s and then their subsequent adoption into non-indigenous, middle class families across the United States as well as Canada. The emotional and physical separation of the adoptees from their birth families continues to affect the indigenous community and the adult adoptees. The Sixties Scoop was to help the Canadian Government with the assimilation of Indigenous cultures and communities.

A truly unique American mass culture saw its creation in the 1920’s where radio shows and movies could be shared all over the country and more Americans were living in cities than ever before. The creation of mass culture in America could be seen as a side effect of all of these new technologies and societal differences that took place in the 20s. Time space compression also had a large effect on mass culture as well. In the 20s because of the creation of new technologies. people could now communicate throughout the country and develop their own similar culture.
With every new generation of teenagers or young adults, there always seems to be this negative look towards the youth culture. What really strikes me is that it happens with every new generation. It seems like once a person hits their teenage years they suddenly become “rebels” of society, and for what reason? How do most adults see the younger generation? They are young people who have bad manners, no respect for the elderly, they are real tyrants, they do not stand up when elders walk in, they do not listen to their parents or teachers, they talk in the presence of adults, and they eat gluttonously (Socrates).
