Fashion in the 20s Men’s fashion consisted of the loss of constant formal attire, and the introduction of more casual wear. It even became acceptable for men to be seen in athletic wear. The most remarkable change was the evolution of women’s fashion- the introduction of the “flapper”.
As the 18th century was coming to a close, women 's fashion took on some changes. In art and architecture, many things from ancient Greece had become fashionable and this had an effect on fashion too. Skirts became narrower and waists became higher. Gowns had less lace, frills, and ruffles. Some fashions in the early 1800 's made women look much like statues of Greek goddesses!
One of the biggest personal changes for women was the way they were able to dress. Back then, your average woman would be seen wearing a dress most of the time. However, in the 1920’s you would pass by women wearing shorter skirts and noticeable makeup. For women, this signified something greater than short skirts and makeup. This signified a new era of personal expression and living outside of expected social norms.

The 1920’s was an amazing decade in american history. Life was great and the economy was booming. It didn’t seem that anything could ruin life at this point, but for men things were about to change and for most that was not good. Women were trying to change their role in society from just being in the house, taking care of children, and pleasing their husbands. They did this by cutting their hair short and wearing loose fitting dresses.
The 1920’s were a record changing time for women in the United States as they were given the right to vote. This was a new for women as most of them held down jobs for the men during World War 1 when the men returned back they wanted to continue working. This ban on women working when the men returned caused an uproar within society and got women to stand up for themselves to gain further independence. This newfound confidence in women was then shown in their physical appearance as they began to take on an androgynous look. Which involved downplaying their waists and wearing bras that flattened their breasts.
The 1920s influence is still seen in today 's culture, many people still embrace the 1920s as an age of great change and individualism. This age made woman who they are today, not only through fashion but by breaking down barriers to new forms of lifestyles not discovered by the common people. Not only was fashion used to express the rebellious lifestyle but today it is used to express who people are and where they come from as in what their occupation is as well as gender and race. Without the fashion of the 1920s fashion would be but a synonym for clothing and would have no meaning or power towards it. In the 1920s fashion was a movement of freedom with flappers, bobbed hairstyles and using art as a fashion statement. “Fashion should be stylish and fun,” (Twiggy). In any decade fashion was a way of saying something. One of the women’s careers was being in the fashion industry.
They could dress the way they wanted, be more comfortably and they were able to express themselves through their clothing. Before 1920, women were not as free to express themselves through clothing. Most of the clothing style came to be after the war ended(1914-1918). The flapper dress era has been around from 1920 to about 1930.
It wasn’t until the 1920s women’s fashion sense became a bit less traditional and much more scandalous. Women began to wear short skirts, backless dresses and low necklines. They accessorized with strings of beads and chunky high heels. Most cut off their long, luscious locks for shorter, bobbed hair. Women used makeup to finish off their new look.
The 1920’s was a period of dramatic social and political change. More than half of America lived in cities and fashion was changing like crazy. The most familiar symbol of the “Roaring Twenties” is the flapper: a young woman with bobbed hair and short skirts who drank, and smoked, in addition to being more sexually “free” than previous generations. This provided designers with more freedom, and allowed them to express themselves in their clothing.
