The supermarket is one of causes of obesity. The transportations to get the food was hard not many public services to get food. The chapter then talks about how on convenient stores are usually always open with food filled with tons of fats and sugars and how they have access to this 24/7. Another thing they talked about
Desiree Nielsen, Registered Dietitian and Author of the book, “Un-Junk Your Diet” educates her clients on how to select healthy foods for their families and of course, themselves. However, genetically modified organism is the secret ingredient that aggravates her care goals. Nielsen claims that there evidence to suggest they might cause harm to humans and livestock over time. She thinks that the appropriate safety test for genetically modified food consist of running long-term trials contrasting a population who did not consume GMOs to one that did. Nielsen give her clients food/nutrient advice based on functional role in the human body and the risk versus benefit of consuming them.
In the article “The Fat Tax,” Jonathan Rauch ironically discusses the new public policy concern with obesity. Although the article is a satire, it’s economic analysis is actually valid. In order to get his point across, Rauch uses sarcasm, appeals to logos, and degrades the issue of obesity to help Americans better understand the “big picture.” Moreover, if the diet of American consumers does not change then maybe advertising more exercise to lose weight will cut down the obesity rate; but to be just as effective, enacting the fat tax will improve health as well.
Hannah Gardner uses propaganda to try and make people eat more potatoes. She talks about a lab experimenting in producing potatoes in a more efficient and faster way. The lab claims that this way will produce potatoes faster than ever. Hannah states people eat to much noodles and rice and she is trying to draw them away from that and eat more potatoes. She states that potatoes require 30 percent less water than rice, wheat, and corn and that this will help our water shortages from worsening.
According to Pollan, the focus of society on the nutrients in food has not helped the obesity epidemic in the Western world. According to Pollan, “The industrial food supply was promptly reformulated
In “What You Eat Is Your Business,” Radley Balko tackles the issue of who is responsible for fighting obesity. Balko argues that the controversy of obesity should make the individual consumers culpable for their own health and not the government (467). As health insurers refrain from increasing premiums for obese and overweight patients, there is a decrease in motivation to keep a healthy lifestyle (Balko 467). As a result, Balko claims these manipulations make the public accountable for everyone else 's health rather than their own (467). Balko continues to discuss the ways to fix the issue such as insurance companies penalizing consumers who make unhealthy food choices and rewarding good ones (468).
The claim is that consumers should not be buying a package of eggs for $3.45 when they can buy the same eggs for $.99. Well, that's what is wrong with the society, we want what is cheap and fast, not necessarily whether or not it is better for us. The Industrial chain puts out fast food that is terrible for the body, and uses lots of poisonous chemicals to make the food look and taste “Good.” What the consumers also do not see in Industrial food chain supermarkets is that most of the popular chains failed to achieve decent grades for fresh food, and reducing the amount of food wasted. Over 165.6 billion dollars was wasted over the surplus of foods, and 40% of food was thrown out for being old and modeling(USDA).
Pollan believes supersized meals are making us fat. First of all, Pollan states,“People eat 30% more if giving a large portion”... (82). It shows that the large the portion is the more they will eat. According to pollan another problem about our meals is, “In the same way, our built-in instincts tell us to eat lots of sugar and fat” (82) Because humans are warm-blooded creatures, that have a built-in sweet tooth that makes them want to eat fat and sugar.
The summers I’ve spent in Tonga were full of good natural foods that were either picked from the backyard or somewhere local. Ingredients used to make this delicious beverage called otai contains; watermelon or mangoes, crushed pineapples, coconut, milk, water, and sugar. The combinations of these different components made in Tonga gives a unique taste, but otai made in Tonga compared to how it’s made in America are the same. The texture and sweetness of this beverage is different and isn’t as satisfying as it is made in Tonga.
Obesity has been one of the largest epidemics for years now, but only recently been one of the top three causes of death in the U.S.. The real cause of obesity has also been quite controversial due to the fact that no one can unanimously blame one person; some saying that the consumers are to blame for buying and eating the food, others saying that big companies are to blame for lack of disclosure. big companies deceive consumers, and as a result are solely responsible for obesity. Even though food labels are presented on the back of almost every store bought product, consumers don't always know what they are ingesting, however, this can be prevented with more disclosure. In paragraph ten of “ An Equal Shot: Big Fat America, Michael Maiello states, “By all means put chemicals, hormones,
Companies have to make a choice between making a profit and providing cheap food. In her article Miller is asking these companies to stop making a profit and instead offer cheap healthy food because people are suffering. While this may be a good cause, it is not a feasible cause. If they do people will have to be laid off and some companies would have to close. This is not a smart business move for them, so they will not be willing to change.
Junk Food’s author Vicki Cobb examines six typical junk foods – popcorn, corn chips, chocolate, candy, potato chips, and soda. Each section covers facts about why these snacks are addicting. Along with the addicting salt and sugar, each section highlights facts and information that explains why these foods are not the best choice when choosing a snack. Not only is this book packed with information, but it also contains the science behind each food. The scientific information allows the reader to explore each food through an experiment that unravels even more mind blowing information.
Is it the nation’s goal to maximize obesity? The consumption of highly processed food has taken an enormous toll on the nation’s health. The government has tried many things to combat the rise of obesity. There have been initiatives to improve the health of Americans through nutrition. “Starting over a century ago, the USDA has empowered Americans to make healthy food choices by providing a number of publications, food guidance symbols, and, more recently, a suite of interactive online tools” (A Brief History of USDA Food Guides, 2017).
Heath problems with poor nutrition include: high-blood pressure and cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, learning problems, obesity and many more. “ The highest levels of obesity were observed in census tracts with no supermarkets (large, corporate-owned chain food stores), with access to only grocery stores or convenience stores” (Larson et al.). Therefore, if residents had greater access to healthier foods we would predict that their health would improve. Studies suggest that people who have better access to supermarkets and other stores that offer fresh food have a healthier food intake
As a hole there should be more restaurants that promote healthy food choices. Obesity in the United States is out of proportion and something need to be don , not necessarily at the point of government intersection but this needs to be fix some way somehow. ”public health experts say that an unhealthy diet and the lack of exercise are still the two biggest culprits. ”-Felix gusson.
