I began my undergraduate education at Colorado State University in 2004. I declared my major as Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing. At this point in my life, I had no clue what I wanted to do for my career and thought this would be the best option and give me the most diversity of career options. Going into my sophomore year, I began a job in the emergency department at the hospital located in the college town. In high school, I was a Biology Olimpiad student, I love Biology and I love tutoring younger students. I always had that love for babies and children, may be it’s because I never had a younger brother or sister. In 2009 I won a gold medal on National Biology Olimpiad. At that moment I recognized that hard work and discipline will lead you to the place you want to be. While studying Biology I always found human anatomy and physiology fascinating, how every second our immune system is protecting us from microorganisms and parasites, and how these cells are trained to be self-tolerant or how our brain rewires and heals itself and can compensate it’s damaged part, etc.
The career choice that I have most interest in is being a veterinarian. Why? Well the chance to help animals, the experience, and the salary. To begin with a Veterinarian is a licensed doctor of animal health who was trained at a university and gives medical and surgical care/treatment to animals.
This requires that I take all the courses required by medical schools as an undergraduate but hardly limits my choices in the types of sciences I explore. While biochemistry is my main interest, the flexibility that Penn provides for its students would allow me to take a wider range of courses and ultimately have a deeper understanding of the natural world. Many a hapless high schooler has entered university unsure of their course of study, or even course of study. I am not one of those students. Since Sophomore year I have always known I wanted to do something along the lines of general chemistry and medicine. Then came a career day to my high school, and a pharmacist came to speak to us, needless to say she got me hooked on the profession. A seamless blend of chemistry and medicine was just what I wanted.
Second semester of my sophomore I had the opportunity to apply for the health science technical program at the college for nursing. I had known that I wanted a medical career. I got accepted into the program and started attending the classes during my junior year. Entering the program I was not entirely sure what I wanted to be or if I even really wanted to be in the program. The HST program introduced me to all the career you could apply for.
It is often difficult for a person to decide what field he or she wants to go into, especially in their teenage years. Deciding what a person desires as a career for the rest of his/her life is a challenge, especially since most people spend just about the rest of their lives doing that occupation, which they chose while they were in high school. Some people change their majors and go into something else, but this has a very heavy toll on that person 's bank account; it will weigh it down, especially if they could barely afford it the first time around. Therefore, the two majors that I have been back and forth between are Computer Science and Molecular Diagnostics (which is a component of the medical field), due to how stressful they are, how fast they are growing, how in demand they are, how rigorous they are in school, how the typical work week looks like, and how much human interaction there is.
I became intrigued by science in high school because of the wide range of study available and flexibility of the subject. There were endless possibilities, but I soon found a favorite: biology. Studying biology would give me the ability to better understand how the human body works, and specifically the genetic code. It took me a little over two years to finally decide on a major, and to this day I am still working on my biology degree as a new transfer student at Rowan University. Picking my major wasn’t an easy path, but its what I needed to do to make a final decision. The question that I mentioned earlier “ What will you be doing on this date 20 years from now?” played a huge factor in me deciding what I wanted my major to be. I couldn’t see myself working with computers for the rest of my life I found it to be quite boring, and throughout high school and even in college I always had a passion for science. Learning about animals played a huge part in me role in me picking biology as my science of choice.
