Similar to medical positions, excellent attention to detail will be needed for accurately recording data, performing diagnostic tests and administering medication to animals. Career and College Research Paper A veterinary career isn’t a goal easily met, nor quickly met; but I know few people can say they love what they do, and the hurdles I’ll have to face are worth getting to be one of those people. Veterinarians come into work everyday, whether that be a clinic, farm, or lab, treating and diagnosing medical conditions in animals. Depending on the type of veterinarian, this can range from household pets to exotic or endangered species. This is something I’ve imagined working towards since I was able to comprehend what a career was, and I’ve only gotten more determined.

“Veterinary communication is based on the use of medical and scientific terminology. Proper use of medical terminology comes under the SCANS competency for “Information” and “Foundation Skills.” (Pattengale) This shows us that in order to become a veterinary assistant you must know how to apply medical terminology to your job. Also, “Your care duties include providing animals with food and water; taking x-rays, holding animals still during treatment; administering medication as directed…and monitoring the response of animals to treatment.”
I became aware of their hunger and need for shelter and soon I started providing food for whichever stray animals I crossed paths with. I knew that by giving just one meal I would be giving these animals a chance at survival. After realizing my affection for animals, especially cats, and my need to provide a hand to hold, I knew that veterinary technology was the path for me. This project will provide me with the information I need to know to dive head first into this career. I especially want to know what my educational options are, what a typical day on the job is like, what the future job outlook is, and what pros and cons are to be considered.
To become a simple vet technician, or another entry-level position, a student must take a two year associate degree program in the topic of veterinary technology. However, to become a vet technologist, a student must take a four year veterinary technology program as well as study subjects like science, biology and math during high school (“Bioscience Careers”). After their college classes, the average LAT then begins as a trainee under the constant supervision of a veterinarian. However, if the LAT has had more hands-on experience with medical equipment during their college courses, it is possible for them to have less on-the-job training. Once the LAT has had enough training and education, they can then take the exam for the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).
While I was growing up, I always had a deep passion and love for animals. Whether I was out catching lizards or working with local animal rescue to save abandoned or hurt animals. Aside from rescuing animals, I adopted quite a few and had a mini zoo in my house. Everything from exotic pets to domestic. With having all of these animals, I have spent quite a bit of time in the veterinary clinics all around town.
I love being around animals, and I have always dreamt of the day where I have the to pursue my long-term goal as a professional career. Spending the day with animals knowing that my abilities will help others such as, families, who have pets, is something that has always intrigued me. I have always been interested in the medical field too, also illustrating my passion and dream of becoming a veterinarian. Once achieving my degree from Colorado State University, I plan to open my own veterinary medicine practice. This field of study is increasing and flourishing into a affluent profession, one that I know I can contribute my absolute best towards.
