Course syllabus provided by instructors, serve as a blueprint for the structure of the class. A Well-developed syllabus provides students with an opportunity to view an outline of the course, prepare for the level of coursework, and outline the expectations of the instructor. As stated by O’Brien, Mills, and Cohen (2008), “the syllabus offers the first opportunity that the faculty has to encourage and guide students to take responsibility for learning” (p.5). When students are presented with a strong and well-developed syllabus, they are able to set goals for themselves and create a plan to become knowledgeable of the objectives that are created for the course. Students are made aware of the availability of the instructor as well as alternate times and methods of communication. The objectives section provides students with an insight of the knowledge that they should gain from this course.
One of the positive aspects of this syllabus is the details regarding their expectations for classroom behavior with emphasis placed on the attendance policy as well as submitting late assignments. Making students aware of the expectations of the class helps to set the tone and ensure that students are aware of the requirements for the class.
