Are you good at math, science, engineering, or technology? If you said yes, chances are you have mastered L-directed thinking; the more analytical skills your brain posses. However, what happens to our R-directed thinking skills? Although we use both sides of our brain while executing tasks, certain skills are more active in one hemisphere than another. Creativity, empathy, and laughter, are all skills dominated by the right side of our brain. At the moment we live in a society dominated by L-directed thinking, but as our world changes, so does the way we think. Abundance, relationships, and the search for meaning, have shed light on the importance of these R-directed skills, and their importance in today's world. Daniel H. Perhaps it was shoes, a phone, or maybe a bag of chips. What made you decide to purchase that specific product, instead of another one in the same category? Abundance in the 21st century has changed the way we consume, and the way we market. “For businesses, it’s no longer enough to create a product that’s reasonably priced and adequately functional. It must also be beautiful, unique, and meaningful…” (Pink 33). Creativity sets every individual apart, and enriches the world with different perspectives. With aesthetics playing such a big role in the business world, and most careers in general, it is hard to overlook its significance. Maybe next time you have 5 extra minutes, take the time to doodle a little. Exercise those creative skills to their full ability. With creativity being so unique to every individual, this puts some people at a greater advantage.
