A Young Person's Guide To The Grading System Summary

As a freshman in college, I get graded on a tone from all my classes. I typically get good grades such as A’s and B’s. But at the end of the day, did I learn something out of any assignments? To be honest I just wanted an A in the class. Think about it, do we really need letter grades? Do letter grades help students? In the article “A Young Person’s Guide to the Grading System” by Jerry Farber addresses these questions. Farber came up with his idea of a credit or no credit system, it’s we’re the student either gets the credit for meeting the minimum material for the class or they don’t get the credit with no penalization. In this article, Farber argues that his grading system is more helpful because the letter grade A – F system has ruined student’s motivation to learn and that students will have a better outcome when they have a desire to learn. The letter grade system is the typical grading way. Now in days, it’s stressful for students to concentrate on education, Farber says that the students get to stressed out with letter grades, also he believes that students can’t expand their knowledge in school.
