ADHD was first recognized as an defect in the morals of children in 1902, and there has been controversy ever since. After reading both of the articles, I believe that ADHD is a real disorder. The “No” article mentioned how there was not a firm definition from different psychologists about what qualifies as ADHD. This statement tells me that many different psychologists believe in ADHD, which is the opposite of what the article is trying to convey. The “Yes” article did a good job at conveying that ADHD has many different forms and each diagnosis will not be the same as others. Throughout my life, especially in high school, I knew several people that were diagnosed with ADHD. There was an occasion when something seemed odd about one of them. They seemed distant and inattentive, and when I confronted them about it to make sure they were okay they mention they forgot their medication. If ADHD was not a real disorder, there would not be such a noticeable difference when that friend forgot to take their medication. One issue I had with the “no” article was its argument that ADHD was not real due to many different symptoms and intensity of symptoms. There are many other “real” mental disorders that have varying intensities. Depression, anxiety, and OCD all have varying levels. These levels can range from mild to severe, and ADHD is no different. Another problem I had with the “no” article was its use of broad generalizations to try and show that ADHD is not a real disorder. One point it brought up was about parents abusing an ADHD diagnosis in order to make their child easier to deal with. This problem, however, is very rare. Some studies show the amount to be as little as 8% of diagnosis are false positives. Of those 8%, an even lower amount would be due to parents abusing the system. People abuse different systems often, from government care to health related issues. People abusing a system does not make an issue less
