Marissa Ramirez Professor Matiella AIS 1203 27 September 2016 Summary of AIS 1203 Anthropocene is defined as the impact that society has on the Earth. In this day and age, humans have been a dominant force in determining the makeup of the environment around us. The way to ensure that society’s impact does not become too extreme is to educate. In AIS 1203, we have learned about the impact that education has on humans and their wellbeing and the role of the university. We have learned that education is a key investment when trying to formulate the make up of a good society. Education begins with a child’s parents, who are responsible for teaching it skills needed for preschool like the alphabet and the numeric system. Children of impoverished families typically stay in a cycle of poverty because the quality of education in lower class communities is so poor. Barbara Comber shows support of this idea when she states that “improv[ing] educational outcomes…will improve economic conditions for everyone, and thereby eradicate poverty and inequality” (394). Having access to a high quality education system, no matter which societal class one belongs to, is crucial to breaking the poverty cycle within a country. Additionally, Patricia Briscoe argues the same thing on a global scale: “education plays an increased and pivotal role in the challenge to improve global societies” (5). Her belief that education can break the poverty cycle of the world is another thing we have learned in this course. While I do believe this is true, I also believe that some parents of poorer families could invest time into their children’s education, instead of money, and eventually achieve the same outcome.
