On the great day of August 7, 1742 one of our great generals was born. His name was Nathanael Greene. He lived for Forty Four years (1742-1786). He was one of the most respected generals of the Revolutionary War. When he was a child his education was limited, all though he received a good teaching with the available books, such as the Bible.
Finally in 1785 Nathanael Greene settled on his plantation with his wife and children. Greene looked forward to a future of happiness and contentment. Nathanael Greene went to Savannah on a business trip in June 12, 1786. On his journey home Greene decided to stop at the plantation of a friend to see his rice fields. During his visit at his friend 's plantation, Greene was exposed to the hot rays of the sun.
Eric Jensen, author of Teaching with Poverty in Mind, focused one of the chapters of his book on how poverty affects behavior as well as academic performance. Jensen gives factors which create problems when it comes to social and academic success; these include emotional and social challenges, acute and chronic stressors, cognitive lags, and health and safety issues. Emotional problems begin when the children are young due to the lack affection toward the young child which then causes social problems in the child's future. Children raised in poverty are more likely to act-out, be impatient and impulsive, be rude, etc. Later in life these children are often absent in school, don’t have a large attention span, are less creative, few social skills, little motivation, and often depressed.
Childhood poverty affects us all at some point especially since it directly affects our future generations to come. Imagine not having access to things that you need to prosper due to you being born to a single parent household or being raised in a certain community. Imagine being given the “short end of the stick” due to things beyond your control. That’s how children who experience child poverty are presented to the hardships of life and survival. Currently 17% of our nation’s children live in poverty (CHILDREN IN POVERTY IN UNITED STATES, 2022).
Unlike middle class families where parents explore their child attitudes based on their behavior (A. Driscoll/ N.G. Nagel, 2010). Not only does poverty have an effect on parents, but it can have a greater effect on kids physically, cognitively and affect their social-emotional development.
There are around 3.7 million children living in poverty in the UK. Which is more than a quarter of all children. Families with low income tend to have overriding feelings of stress and worry as they try to balance the costs of food, education, healthcare and other basic needs of their family. When these parents try to juggle their finances and pay for basic necessities this can cause problems in relationships between the parents which can lead to inconsistencies within discipline, a lack of love and support, and overall inadequate parenting of the children. For the children, the feelings of unhappiness and stress from their parents may mean that the child may feel isolated and lack attention.
Children with disabilities and are from low-income families tend to have a harder time in school. For “Children who are poor are more likely to become disabled through poor health care,” suggesting that it being low-income then there is a higher chance of becoming disabled. When children have a disability “Only 10% of all children with disabilities are in school and of this number only half who begin, actually complete their primary education,” (Children and Young People with Disabilities). This is implying that only a small amount of children with disabilities barely even completing primary education. So poverty can lead children to developing a disability which then increases the chances of not being able to get an equal education as the students that don’t have a disability.
The effect of poverty on kids also hurts them mentally. Most children growing up in poverty do not succeed because even though they can go to school, their home life is holding them back from reaching their full potential. Parents in most of these situations can not afford to give their child extra help, for example, parents can 't afford to buy their child a book to practice reading, or a pencil and notebook to work on their writing skills. After reading “Class Differences in Child-Rearing Are on the Rise” by Claire Cain Miller, I realized that there are many aspects that go into socio-economic status. One thing that initially stood out to me within the article is that, “Poorer parents have less time and fewer resources to invest in their children, which can leave children less prepared for school and work, which leads to lower earnings” (Miller). This stood out to me because children have no decision on what family they are born into, and the fact that if they are born into a less privileged family then they are more likely to grow up to be poorer due to the lack of preparation for school and work that they obtained during childhood. Even though there are multiple parenting approaches, most parents want the best for their children, even if they can not give their children the most financial stability.
Low income families do not just get the title “poverty” branded onto them, but they have much more negative effects attached to the label. These families in the bottom third of the income group suffer immensely and this does not solely affect the family as a whole, but it affects each and every individual included. After several readings about how these families are affected, it is important to point out that children are the most unfortunate because of long-term damages. The long-term effects of children in low income families include developmental, psychological and emotional effects.
It threatens a child’s development, cognitive and motor developments. Research and data show poverty has unfavorable effects on society’s most vulnerable people. Various studies show that in the United States, comes to the world an economically disadvantaged child every 35 seconds and nearly 13 million children live in poverty (Pettigrew, 2009). I haven’t found any statistics on this topic in Mexico so far. Policymakers, society, teachers and, faculty should take further actions, in addition to the school system’s efforts, to help this generation of low-income families close the gap of academic achievement between economically disadvantaged students and affluent
This is very interesting to me because a lot of people equate poverty with neglect and this is not the case, just because you may be poor doesn’t mean that you are a neglectful parent, there are children that live below the poverty level and their parents love them and nurture them and care for them better than a child that lives in a million dollar home. So just because you have money it doesn’t necessarily mean that you are caring for your child, you may not clean or cook or know how to nurture your own child and that is a form of neglect. Now because a family is living in poverty the stress of that may cause neglect, and that is the economic theory of child neglect, so there are some families that live in poverty and are perfectly happy still loving and nurturing their children, and there are some families that can’t handle the poverty that in turn causes stress and in some cases may result in neglect, that is an example of that fine line. These statistics are overwhelming due to the fact that child poverty affects all areas of their lives. Children exposed to poverty at such a young age are at a disadvantage in several areas; these children are at risk of low academic achievement, resulting in lasting negative effects. Our economy is not able to thrive if child poverty continues. Children living in poverty are also at risk of dropping out of school, being unemployed, and entering the juvenile justice system. Our government is responsible for ensuring that child poverty ceases to be an issue in the United States.
A child growing up in poverty faces more harsh conditions than those not living in poverty. They might have to fight and steal for food, clothing or other needs that they do not have. This can lead to juveniles committing acts of deviance. For example children food from a strore or gas station. That child commited theft for the reason that the didn’t have the nessasary needs to properly eat.
