The Application of Self-Care to Promote the Health and Well-being of Nurses Among all healthcare professionals, nurses are known to have some of the highest incidences of substance abuse, depression, and suicide (Sampson et al., 2019). This phenomenon can be related to multiple factors of the occupation such as understaffing, excessive workload, high stakes, and long work hours. Nurses and healthcare facilities are in need of advocacy for personal health and well-being. (2019) emphasize a program called MINDBODYSTRONG that nurses may utilize to improve their health and well-being. This program focuses on improving stress, anxiety, depression, job satisfaction, and improving healthy lifestyle behaviors among new nurses. It has been shown to enhance the confidence in newly licensed registered nurses to handle their stress, while decreasing symptoms of anxiety and depression. Sampson et al. (2019) explains how MINDBODYSTRONG has also been proven to instill lifelong cognitive behavior skills that stay with nurses throughout their career. Programs, meetings, and training such as this can vastly improve the health and well-being of nurses by offering them outlets and options to guide and personalize their self-care.
