Abortion is one of the most controversial topics in society today mainly because it is “the deliberate killing of an unborn human life” (Pennock). Many humanitarians have raised their voices against this brutality yet it is legal in many parts of the world. Pope Francis emphasizes the concept of right to life of an unborn human life by saying that “the right to life is the first among all the rights” and Mahatma Gandhi once said that “It seems to me as clear as daylight that abortion would be a crime” (Quotes). Abortion can be performed either through a medical or surgical procedure. The medical procedure is carried out by consuming an abortion pill and the surgical procedure involves either the vacuum aspiration or dilation and evacuation. There are many disadvantages to both of these procedure as they increase the chance of recurrent miscarriages and infections (Notes) such as the pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Abortion can have a negative psychological impact as they would be mentally tortured for the rest of their life by the fact that they killed a life form and that they may not be able to give birth again. Also, getting pregnant shortly after completing abortion can be harmful, especially after the medical procedure as it causes severe bleeding due to the intake of the abortion pill. Statistics show that each year 68,000 women die of unsafe abortion, about 13%, which makes it one of the leading causes of maternal mortality (Haddad). These risks and complications can be avoided by choosing many alternatives to abortion such as “adoption or organizations such as Birthright that offer psychological, spiritual and medical help for women” (Pennock).
