Maslow’s family, being middle class immigrants, felt education was extremely important. Maslow loved to read books he would always go to the library and read for hours. When Maslow attended elementary school, he was the first Jew to attend a non Jewish school. He was picked on by kids and his teachers, but that did not stop him from wanting to read books. He even participated in a spelling bee (Hoffman, 1988). In 1922, Maslow entered Boys High School, where he found it a stimulating place for his academic achievements. Maslow was in charge of different academic clubs and he became an editor for a Latin magazine. Maslow had also edited the school physics paper for a year. He did not do as well in college as he did in high school. He was put on academic probation for his second semester of college for failing a class. In his sophomore year of college, he fell in love with music and poetry. On September 28, 1926, Maslow began legal studies at Brooklyn Law as he still was pursuing his undergraduate degree. He would go to class during the day at City College and got to classes at Brooklyn Law during the night. He did not enjoy learning about the law, so he dropped out of Brooklyn law school and decided to transfer to Cornell University in the winter of 1927. He hoped by attending Cornell University would offer him better academic stimulation. When Maslow attended Cornell with his cousin Will, he was more outgoing and had a small group of friends. But working as a waiter at a fraternity house he felt a sense of personal isolation. He did not feel that his semester at Cornell was neither great nor bad. He found none of his courses inspiring not even his course in elementary psychology. The professor of psychology was one of the founders of American psychology Edward B. Titchener. Maslow did not like Titchener’s teaching, he felt as though he was more focused on his collection of ancient coins than keeping up with the latest development of the field of psychology.
