As I engage this unit’s Read and Attend assignments, I find that my understanding of plagiarism is not as fully developed as I had previously thought. Our Unit 3 Attend assignment shares that “in a general sense plagiarism may be caused by carelessness” and these circumstances frequently precipitate the lack of care required while writing (Bethel University, 2014, p. 11). The academic integrity tutorial provided additional information which I found valuable as well. Common themes within each unit assignment provide strands of continuity, while assisting with a more comprehensive understanding. It is my opinion, the type of plagiarism that is hardest for me to avoid is “plagiaphrasing”, also known as “lazy paraphrasing” (Bethel University, 2014, p. 12).

In this article, author Jodi Wilogren discusses how plagiarism at a school affected an entire community. In December of 2002, a teacher at Piper High School found a shocking statistic: 28 out of 118 sophomores have plagiarized on their biology project, which involved collecting leaves and researching them. A website called turnitin.com detected that one in four papers included sections copied off the internet. The teacher, Mrs. Pelton, gave the students zeroes on their project and forced them to meet with the school board to discuss their behavior. Mrs. Pelton had previously set rules and expectations for the class which stated that plagiarism would result in failure of the assignment and a note to the parents.
What have you learnt about the concept of integrity from your study of ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ and one related text of your own choosing? Integrity means to be whole and undivided and to be honest and uphold your moral principles in what you do and say. The book ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ and the events of Tiananmen square show us this. In particular, ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ helps us see the positive effects of a person’s integrity on society as well as the negative impacts of a person’s lack of integrity on the people around them.
Turnitin and Grammerly were both very helpful in reviewing my work. I really like the ease of Grammerly. It caught my two grammatical errors and indicated how to fix them. It was a great learning experience I plan to use again. Turnitin seemed a little more confusing to me because nothing in my writing was highlighted.
However, it should be taught equally upon all students no matter what nationality and culture. International students should not be excluded because of different overseas education system, nor the policies and assumption be changed but it’s the students responsibility to follow the rules of academic integrity of conduct. But academicals should be held accountable to provide the proper education for the needs of students, so it will help them learn strategies instead of surface-touching. As authors Lenora C. Although, an honor code could help create a trustworthy environment, the idea of just using that is not strong of a foundation as creating it requires many other factors. Just because a student body signs a form stating they shall follow a new set of rules, it does not mean a sense a trust will just formulate. Along with an honor code not being enough to create a trusting environment, it may even create tensions between students. In Source B, it states that,”…”. Students are obligated by the honor code to report any signs of a student’s plagiarizing.
Discussion: I think the hardest plagiarism to avoid is paraphrasing. The reason I think paraphrasing is the hardest is because sometimes its hard to paraphrase someone's else's work without saying just about everything that they stated without getting your point across to your professor. In the academic integrity video I failed the paraphrasing section and I believe I failed that section because I paraphrased the paragraph wrong, by saying wrong I mean I don't think I put my words together well enough stating what the author said properly. By me not paraphrasing it properly I failed , so that let me know that when writing papers this term I need to work on my paraphrasing a lot.
People wonder what is so wrong with cheating or plagiarism. As long as they get the work done or pass the course. But do these students know the real consequences of cheating and plagiarism. Viewing different people aspect of this problem, this happens everywhere. In Brent Staples article “Cutting and Pasting: A senior thesis by (Insert Name)”, he is trying to get through to individuals so that they could stop doing this and the consequences.
Summary of “Academic Integrity” by Arden Miller and Adena D. Young-Jones Which one do you believe cheats more in schools, an online course or a face to face course? Arden Miller and Adena Young-Jones did an article over which one tended to be worse when they found results that were kind of shocking. Of course you expect an online course to cheat more but that was not the case. The results really varied on who the person was, sexuality, age, and other personalities of a person. Arden and Adena, both took surveys of “639 students in both types of classes.
After reading Dudley Delvin’s essay, “Plagiarism in America,” I have come to realize the great extent of plagiarism in American institutions. More often than one might assume, plagiarism occurs within students’ assignments. Delvin highlights the issue and presents a logical solution; however, to fully solve the epidemic, some alterations need to be made to his plan. The modern day student does not fully understand the negative consequences that plagiarism produces. In order for the high levels of cheating to decrease, students must have appropriate punishments that are enforced after each incident, surveillance of assignments, and education about plagiarism and its consequences.

Only when people understand its significance will they be willing to always take action in preventing themselves from committing plagiarism at all costs. People are also taught on the ethics of writing and to always respect the work of others. This education usually starts in higher educational institutions because of the high frequency of academic writing. In Malaysia, institutions such as Government Universities and Private University Colleges make English courses compulsory for all their students in which students are to learn proper forms of citations, paraphrasing, quotation and referencing (Academic dishonesty and plagiarism, n.d.) as it is imperative to acknowledge the source used and give the credit to the original author(s) to prevent from committing plagiarism.
One of the most crucial traits a scholar can develop is a high level of self-efficacy which is essential to academic success. The ability to achieve and to recognize that success can come from being industrious should be the deterring factor for a student who considers committing the act of plagiarism. What is plagiarism one might ask? Voelker, Love & Pentina (2012) define plagiarism as, “putting forward another’s work as your own” (p. 37).
