Growing up I had an inquisitive mind that would be inundated with questions that had not been answered. Fortunately, I was introduced to the field of science; a field that asked multiple questions with the sole purposed of producing answers and understanding of the world. The ideas and concepts of science were easier for me to retain and understand, unlike Shakespeare’s literature. My aptitude for science was notice by a middle school teacher who enrolled me in honors science classes; which cemented the possibility of science as a career for me. As an undergraduate student researcher, I began to understand the physicality and engaging parts of science. My first lab was heavy in molecular biology, my major work consisted of extracting DNA to use as template material for the amplification of the gene and generate primers that bind to the region of interest. There were periods were I needed to improve the protocol for my projects to advance; but as it work I found myself as a resource and a mentor for molecular biology students. Moreover, my perception of science morph and I came to see it as a riddle that …show more content…

My fascination as an undergraduate was stem cells. I choose a Master’s program that was funded by CIRM and focused on stem cell research for the purposed of regenerative medicine. The first year laboratory classes consisted in learning how to generate different cell types from iPS cells, human and mice embryonic stem cells. We manipulated stem cells with different growth factors for the purpose of generating different types of cells. I was in a completely new field I went from DNA extraction of fungus to mammalian cell culturing and animal handling. At this point I was verse in Molecular Biological and Tissue Culturing techniques. My arsenal of techniques was increasing, but my logical thinking of science was still in its infancy, which was exposed in my second year research of my Master’s
