724 Words3 Pages

Stem cell research is currently a serious topic in our country. It is an issue that people have tried to address but unfortunately haven’t. People are clouded by misconceptions and the controversy surrounding it. People only discuss about the moral and ethical issues that bother them but not about the actual contributions that Stem Cell research can create. There has been a lot of debate and speculation on whether Stem Cell research is a justified way of developing advancements towards medicine because of the ethical issues it presents; however the benefits, such as treating diseases, helping with organ transplants, treating burn victims, and improving drug testing, can outweigh the issues some might associate with stem cells.

Organ transplants have always been a problem especially since the number of people waiting for transplants is is much higher than the number of available organs. Organs could be grown in a lab from stem cells and then be used in transplants or to help treat illnesses. Stem cells can potentially reduce the morbidity and mortality for those awaiting transplants. This kind of advancement in medicine is possible with the power of stem cells. No longer will people die from waiting and watching their lives pass by. No longer will waiting be a factor in a patient’s well being. The wait for organ transplants will be no …show more content…

Severe burns can take a while to recover from when second and third degree burns are considered. Burn victims tend to endure an enormous amount of pain from their wounds as well as frustration from the challenges of healing. The challenge of healing can make burn victims anxious but with stem cells patients will no longer feel that way. Instead of donor tissues being donated, stem cells could be used to produce new and healthy tissues. This includes skin tissues which can provide relief to those who have been severely burned. The process of forming these new skin cells can be done by locating and removing specific stem cells from a tissue and then triggering them to differentiate outside of the body before transplanting them back into the patient. This can be really helpful as a very small piece of skin can be progressively grown, allowing doctors to cover a burn that is often much larger than the original size of the skin piece.
The benefits of stem cells does not stop here. They hold a major importance in the pharmaceutical field. New drugs can be tested on stem cells to assess their safety before testing drugs on animal and human models. Lets say for example we wanted to test an anti-tumor drug. This can be accomplished by creating a cancer cell line specifically for this situation. This opens up many possibilities for those wanting to develop and experiment with new drugs. If the conditions can be perfectly
