Adult development focuses on the concept of successful aging. Therefore, it is important to know and understand those things that may create problems on the concept of successful aging. To be aware of the things that may create problems on adult development are several beliefs, ideas or theories. These beliefs, ideas, and theories contributes environmental hazards, developmental processes, and genetic tendencies to the aging process such as the wear and tear theory and genetic control theory of aging.
The wear and tear theory of aging believes that through time, the body begins to fall apart due to wear and tear caused by damage done to cells and body systems. It suggests that if people do not take care of their health through the aging process there may be some conflict or problems that may affect a person’s ability to cope in old age. For example, when you purchase a new vehicle, basic car maintenance is recommended to ensure that you do not experience or encounter any form of car trouble or failures. The genetic control theory focuses on the genetic programming encoded within our DNA. We are born with a unique genetic code, a predetermined tendency to certain types of physical and mental functioning, and that genetic inheritance determines how quickly we age and how long we live. This theory suggests that our DNA may predict how long we live. In reflection to the genetic control theory of aging, we must rely on our parents and genes to help determine how successful we will age. It appears that it is beneficial to explore and understand your genetic makeup. By understanding your genetic makeup may not allow you to make changes to the aging process; however, it can provide an understanding in to the aging process and help a person’s ability to cope in old
