Life in sparta was different than athens because sparta had no interest in art,music and education. Everything was centered in sparta was focused on the military. My opinion strengths did not outweighed the weakness of sparta education and I will explain how the strength was the most important than caring the weakness of sparta education.
In Athens, women were mostly secluded from many things. They could not vote, leave the house without permission from their husband, and more. In Sparta, the rules for women were much more lenient. Spartan women would train with the men and could own land. In both Sparta and Athens, women could marry and raise children.

Athens and Sparta shared many common values and views but also had their differences. They were both city-states which is a city and its surrounding villages functioning as an independent political unit. Athens and Sparta were city-States over empires because of all of the mountains in Greece that separated the land and they acted as a modern day state would. For example, one city-state would have different views and government than a city-state on the other side of a mountain. Athens and Sparta had similar values and views on how to treat people, but had differed views on education and government.
If you’ve heard of Sparta and think it’s fantastic, think again. Sparta was a city state located on a peninsula in southern Greece called the Peloponnese. Sparta was very violent and all they thought about was having the strongest military. Sparta was abusive to children, and any society that abuses its citizens shouldn’t last, and Sparta didn’t. Sparta was a Greek city-state whose sole purpose was military strength. While Sparta lasted for 300 years, any strong society would last longer. They also abused their slaves and killed them with no warning. The weaknesses weighed Sparta down, so here are some of those weaknesses.
The significance of Athenian men receiving army training as well as an education allowed for not only the bettering of their military, (which due to their location by the Aegean Sea had one of the strongest Navies in Ancient Greece) it also let them have knowledge in the arts and philosophy, this makes me want to live in Athens because I would know that i would be protected and the economy of my city state would be stable. Currently there is a great debate happening about Athens and Sparta. Some people believe that Athens is a better city state. After examining both positions, it is a evident that Sparta is better than Athens, because Sparta had a more efficient education, government and economy. Spartans oligarchy surpassed the Athenians government in many ways.
I would like to educate the masses on a matter of frequent debate. This is none other then Athens vs Sparta, and I can say the thorough research and facts have lead me to concluded that Sparta is a much better city-state then Athens. Sparta is better then Athens because of its respect of women, more equal school system, integrity of government, treatment of slaves, and superior military. First of all, women were given far more rights than in Athens. First of all, Women in Sparta could own there own land, participate in politics and the olympics among other things.
Also, unlike Sparta, Athenian men and boys did not have to dedicate their life to the army. Led by a strong leader named Pericles, Athens was made strong and beautiful. They also had excellent trade relationships. Opposite of Sparta, Athenians lived a comfortable lifestyle. There was a time called the Golden Age of Athens, which is when the Athenian culture thrived.
Athens was better than Sparta because, it had a better government, education system, and had more cultural achievements. One element of Athens that made it the better city-state was the government. While in Sparta they had an oligarchy, a form of government in which the government power resides in the hands of select few; however in Athens they had a direct government. Direct government is where all the citizens participate directly in the government, by voting on laws, placement of public works, etc. Instead of a few individuals having a say in what happens, everybody can be heard and have an equal say.
Clearly, Sparta and Hellenistic women had more freedom and social rights than Athens women. The reason of how this phenomena occurred might be that at that period of time, Athens had the largest population of Attica. This indicates that the in this male community in Athens, the males could carry on almost all of the responsibilities of a society while the women could just stay at home and serve the men while they took part in public life. However, in Sparta and the Hellenistic era which there were not so much people around, women’s role would be more than simply taking care of household and children, they would need to shoulder some responsibility for their society, which brought along freedom and rights for
Sparta vs. Athens To begin with, Athens and Sparta were both famous in antiquity for their legend, cultures and the character of the people. On the one hand, the two poleis share certain obvious affinities, such as language, geographical scope, a common Greek ancestry etc. On the other hand, they were polar opposites in many aspects, from social spheres, political structures, to military might, which I believe there are some hidden depths in these city-states. Hence, let’s look at how did their people obtain the right to participate in public life and make decisions affecting the community, and who held public office first.
