The Surprising Influences of Agatha Christie Agatha Christie has had the incredible honor of being the third bestselling author of all-time, with only Shakespeare and the Bible out-selling her (Christie Archives Trust). She has also written the world’s bestselling mystery, entitled And Then There Were None (Christie Archives Trust). Many authors such as Agatha Christie implement experiences they have had in their own lives into the novels that they write. Memorable moments such as childhood experiences or tragic events in an author’s life can subtly reappear throughout the author’s novel. Agatha Christie’s first husband was a military officer who cheated on her for two years (Lewis). He never cared about her writings or her family, and he caused her to have an emotional breakdown when he said he wanted a divorce (Lewis). He left her and their one daughter shortly afterwards (Lewis). In the story, Agatha Christie related her first husband to General MacArthur and his wife. General MacArthur is also a military officer. He is extremely emotionally hurt when he finds out that his wife cheated on him for some time (Christie 84). In addition, people all over Europe thought that Agatha Christie’s unfaithful first husband had murdered Agatha Christie when she mysteriously vanished for eleven days without prior notice (Lewis). Her famous disappearance puzzled the police for a long time, and even during the later years of Christie’s life, she never spoke of it (Thorpe). This was portrayed in the novel when Mrs. Rogers dies and some guests at the house think that Mr. Rogers killed his wife, which he did not (Christie 101). At the end of the novel, the whole mystery stumps police and they cannot figure out who the murderer is (Christie 283).
