The Last Flight of Amelia Earhart 20 million people suffer from abiophobia, the fear of being on a plane. Amelia Earhart undoubtedly was not scared of planes. After working as a nurse’s aide for months in a Toronto hospital, scrubbing floors to playing tennis with patients, she then became interested in planes in 1918 at the age of twenty one. She then began spending her spare time at various airfields around Toronto watching planes land and takeoff. She accomplished so much, until an unfortunate event ended her career. The mystery behind Amelia Earhart can be summed up in two theories: her plane broke down and she got captured by the Japanese. There are multiple pieces of evidence that make this theory convincing. For instance, Earhart made it to land without her plane crashing or sinking into the open ocean, “ a revolution supported the theory that she safely landed her plane on a island and radioed for help repeatedly, which would be impossible to do without her plane’s engine working”(Hoover 1). Also, the Japanese were doing something illegal and they knew it would be bad if Earhart brought any attention to it so, “ the Japanese were watching Earharts flight very closely because they were illegaly building their miltary strength on Marshall Islands”(Leder 86). In addition, because the Japanese owned the island where Earhart landed on, they refused to let any Americans search the area and, “ they had been requested to search for Amelia, Fred Noonan, and the Electra in the Marshalls”(Pelt 209). Futhermore, the Japanese thought that Earhart seen what they were doing, so they decided to lock Earhart up and question her but as the theory goes on, “ fourteen months after she was captured from by the Japanese, Earharts health worsened and she died from dysentery”(Leder 89).
