American Airlines, being the world's largest airline, has truly revolutionized their company as it relates to fleet, service, employment, destinations and revenue. This company has made history in the aviation by being a part of the building process for LaGuardia Airport, and being the first airline to offer electronic ticketing. While there are many other contributions to the aviation sector, American has continued to revolutionize this field. The company continues to grow and progress with the addition to rival airlines like Delta, Southwest, and United Airlines. American primarily has been dominant because of major merges between numerous airlines. According to Wikipedia, this historic airline was founded by the collaborative efforts of 82 small airlines around 1930. Some of these independent carriers included: Southern Air Transport, Southern Air Fast Express, Universal Aviation, Thompson Aeronautical Services, and Colonial Air Transport, initially being American Airways. American Airways first established its prominence providing mail carrier service to 72 different cities in the United States, having established a transcontinental route. The name American Airways was short- lived, due to Errett Lobban Cord acquiring them, in which he changed the name to American Air Lines in 1934. American Air Lines became the first airline to operate the DC-3 aircraft, after businessman Cyrus Rowlett Smith was hired in. He was responsible for managing the company, and worked closely with aviation pioneer Donald Douglas in developing the DC-3. For instance, American is a member of the One world Alliance, Delta is member of the Sky Team, United is a member of Star Alliance, and Southwest is neutral. Delta is the oldest of the four, American is second, United is third, and South west is a much younger airline in comparison to the three airlines. The fleets of these airlines are similar with some aircrafts, and different. Southwest Airlines only flies the Boeing 737 aircraft being the world's largest operator. American, Delta, and United fly this aircraft, along with similar aircrafts listed previously in American's fleet. However, neither American nor United fly the Boeing 717 and MD-90 aircrafts. Finally, hubs vary among these airlines. Hubs are very vital to major airlines like these because it serves as a home to
