This assignment will focus on the analysis of the relationship between media and obesity. I will be critiquing the chosen theory which is the health change model. This theory is part of health and social care. As well as this I will be discussing the media representation and the impacts of media which are influencing on health, wellbeing and social care.
In the media obesity is portrayed as a huge crisis. Media uses a range of techniques to portray this issue. For example, emotional appeals are used to persuade individuals to take a turn for better and improve their lifestyle. It is portrayed as a drain of resources. This is a negative point because it could lead to individuals feeling neglected for support and also lower their self-confidence and self-esteem.
Mass media is mostly used in relation to obesity. “The main means of mass communication (television, radio, and newspapers) regarded collectively.” (Oxforddictionaries.com, 2015)
Billboards as well as TV are the most common way of attracting customers easily. For example, travelling from or to long journeys can become quite tiring and make individuals feel hungry. Individuals tend to make stops at services and if during their journey all they see are unhealthy adverts such as McDonalds it will mentally persuade them to go and purchase it. Point being unhealthy adverts in any forms of media should be put to a stop by the authorities and the government. These should be replaced with much more healthier options and not made to be boring however, made in ways which will appeal out to customers in brighter way. For example, below are a couple of pictures to show how the population is targeted easily and be persuaded without having to communicate with the unhealthy companies
