Marketing and Communications Manager
I listened to Jenny Stotenow who is the Marketing and Communications Manager for Post-it. Stotenow received a bachelor’s degree in advertising from the University of Minnesota and later obtained a Master of Arts degree. She worked at many companies before Post-it, including at advertising firms with brands like Caribou. I found many aspects of her work interesting, including the nature of her job. Stotenow spends most of her time working on teams, which is something that I would because I am a very outgoing and social person. The class I chose to investigate was Digital Content for Brand Communications, (JOUR 4243). According to the College of Liberal Art’s website, this course focuses on skills students need in a communications or public relations career. It also directs students on how to create online content using graphic design tools. One of the core competencies for this course is a desire to solve advertising problems creatively. This fits in with the general career competency of feeling passionate towards solving problems while on the job. Another competency is obtaining an understanding of various communication tactics that can be used to achieve organizational goals. This skill will help to make a student better able to have strong negotiation skills and the ability to defend ideas, which is another core competency. This course also meets the needs of someone who wants this job because it teaches students how to use programs and technology that may be needed for this position or jobs leading up to it. It will help them know the skills prior to interviewing so that they have a competitive advantage when trying to get hired.
