The narrator is joined with her friend who also has a Barbie doll that is slightly different. During the short story the narrator explains how she and her friend make the best of what they have and what they don’t for example when she explains how they invented a dress from a sock by just cutting holes in it. (339) The narrator farther on in the story visits Maxwell Street where they end up getting a good deal on more Barbie dolls due to the fact that they came from a burned down factory and smelled of smoke. (340) What really caught my attention was not that fact that they could get such a great deal on multiple dolls, but rather the attitude of the narrator after receiving the dolls.
In my opinion, I feel as though she symbolizes a life she experienced or grew up in, in the form of Barbie, Ken, and Allen. She gives each doll their own persona; Barbie wanting the dream life and dream husband that everyone wants, but instead she settles for Alan who is a drunk and does nothing. However, she makes it sound as though Barbie does not like the feeling of not having someone, so she continues to be with Alan, hoping he will become better and maybe more successful. One of the biggest strengths of this poem is how people can relate to this in different ways. People can either relate because they know someone like this, or has been through this.
My perception on this line is that because she wasn’t satisfied with her look she idolized these type of women. The tone that was created in this poem is depression, reflective, and bitter. This poem was very relatable because most individuals that have social media, they look at these women with perfect bodies and want to look like them because they have all these guys like their picture. This is conveyed through the use of both dramatic and situational irony used in the poem. The speaker frequently makes mention of the young girls' problems but shows no emotion or sympathy for them. This tone furthers the idea that when placing importance solely on looks women are unable to live up to the standards -these standards frequently lead to young women engaging in self-destructive behavior.
The poem Barbie doll by Marge Piercy is about a little girl who grows up only to kill herself for not living up to society’s standards. The speaker shows how she had a normal childhood and was happy playing with here baby dolls and toy stove. However, during puberty, her body changed and everyone noticed. She was criticized for her “fat nose and thick legs”. She tried to change by dieting and exercising, but soon tired of doing so.
