Social media is a tool that is used by many people around the world. It influence people think differently. Social media promotes one to assimilate themselves to feel more blended in society. In the essay “What’s Black, Then White, and Said All Over ” By Lesile Savana, she explains how social media is promoting social changes. She also pointed out how people are changing themselves to feel more blended in society. She gave examples of white people trying to adapt to hip – hop, and black slangs used in advertising by companies. In another essay, “Leave Your Name At the Border” by Manval Munoz, he explains how the immigrants are trying to blend in with American’s culture and acting something they are not. People get influence by their surrounding or by what they see on television, newspaper or on social networking websites. According to the society’s latest trend, people will try to adapt the trend to seem more fitted in the society. Sava wrote about people trying something they are not used to, to feel themselves more included in the society. “Today, the language of an excluded people is repeated by the nonexcluded in order to make themselves sound more included.”(436). The influence from society forces one to adapt to the trend to feel blended in the society. In today’s society, one is afraid to stand out because everyone is blinding following new social media’s tend. If one does tries to stand up, the society will turn into judgmental and demotivated the one. Therefore many people just blinded follow the trend without questioning the reason. People started doing the ALC bucket challenge because everyone was doing it on social media. Many people who did the challenge did not know what ALC was. They did it because the society was doing it. The influence of social media promotes one to forget their identity. Immigrants feel shame talking in their native language in America because everyone around them are communicating in English or everything they see is in English. This forces the Immigrants to adapt to the English language and leave their native language at home. Munoz explained how his native language became shame for him when he communicated with others. He wrote “English was for public display. Spanish was for privacy – and privacy quickly turned to shame.”(310).The immigrants adapted to the English language because of social media. Everywhere they go, they hear English language being used to communicated or see it being used as writing. Which promotes to their thinking about not being able to blend in with others.
