Should College Athletes Be Paid? There has been much debate on whether or not college athletes should be paid. Can one imagine college athletes receiving pay for play on top of all the money they are given to attend that college? College athletes should not receive payment for play. There are many reasons why college athletes should not be paid. For these athletes, school is already being paid for from scholarships. If they were to be paid, it would be unfair to other non-athlete students, they are not professional athletes and should not be paid like one. Scholarships granted to student athletes cover tuition, fees, room, board and textbooks, according to the National Collegiate Athletic Association website. Some athletes receive scholarships that cover only a portion of these expenses, but many of these student athletes still receive more aid than the average ordinary student. Many student athletes have most everything provided for them in college, giving them a clear advantage over their fellow non sport playing students. For non-athlete students, the experiences of an unpaid internship does not come along with a full-ride scholarship unlike playing a sport and competing doing what they love. ”These athletes are receiving a college education in return for their skills in sports" (Horace 1). In a way, college athletes are already getting paid. Universities should not have to hand out more money to their athletes just to satisfy them. To culminate, college athletes should not be paid to play. There are many reasons why college athletes should not receive payment to play a collegiate sport. Their college is already being paid for due to the scholarships that these athletes have earned. They have been noticed because of their athletic abilities and the college they have decided on is providing free or help with their education fees in turn for the athlete to compete in the sport they play, which is most likely a great hobby to them. College athletes receiving payment for play would be very unfair to non-athlete students. The college athletes already receive scholarships paying for everything in their college experience. They do not need to receive payment for play on top of that. These kids are not professional athletes, so they shouldn’t be paid like one. Also, the schools with the most revenue would buy out all of the good players and this would make the league not as competitive.
