Should College Athletes be paid? Yes, for over a decade many have asked this question. While many argue that college athletes should not be paid, I disagree. Athletes devote their lives to a sport when not getting anything in return. College sports have been a major part of the “American Life” since the early 1800’s baseball, basketball, football, soccer, etc. Millions of fans gather around to watch, cheer on, and support their favorite teams all year long. Athletic programs from all over the United States have brought in revenue to hundreds of different Universities, as well as popularity. Universities such as Alabama, Ohio State, Oregon, Duke, LSU and many more others have made a big impact on their school, but most importantly their sports department by winning national championships and multiple …show more content…
“These hours are distributed over training sessions, games, travel and other required sessions that student athletes must attend in order to remain on the team and keep their full scholarships.”(listland) On top of these hours, college athletes must also manage a full-time class schedule. These two quotes give a prime example of how hard these athletes work on and off the field/court. College athletes have to work 90 hours per week just to remain in school on their scholarship. Having all of these responsibilities is “equivalent to working two full-time jobs with a side job on the weekends just to pay their bills.”(listland) This is one out of many reasons why college athletes should get paid. They are working a full-time job around the clock. Going to class, making good grades, and playing a sport is not an easy task. “The Average American full-time work contract usually stipulates that the employee will work between the hours of 8 AM and 5 PM five days per week. Salaries are also usually based around a 40 hour work week.”
