Should college football players be paid? The NCAA classifies student athletes as amateurs. Meaning they can’t be paid or accept anything made of their behalf. Athletes have absolutely no time to keep a job, so how do they pay for food or personal items? The athletic teams and other organizations make more than enough money to pay players enough to eat a healthy meal. So why shouldn’t they be paid? Being an athlete is a full-time job. On a typical day of a college football player, he will wake up before classes, get a lift or conditioning session in, go to class until 3 or 4 p.m., go to practice, go to mandatory study hall, and then finish homework or study for a test. The big discussion is “they’re already getting a scholarship, isn’t that enough?” The point of this is that a scholarship doesn’t mean cash in a athlete’s pocket. Not only that, athletic programs bring in hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars each year. Through donations, ticket sales, media rights, advertising, and anything else with a price tag, these athletes are symbols for their school and their program. Now the problem of this argument is that not all sport teams are profitable. For example, some less popular teams like tennis, swimming doesn’t earn the university as much money as the bigger
