More and more people are turning their heads towards collegiate sports every day. This means the NCAA is making more and more money by the day. How much of this money goes to the ones practicing and working hard? Not a single cent. I believe this is wrong and that these athletes should be paid. The NCAA makes around $11 billion per year. Colleges use athletes’ names, sell tickets, sell merchandise, and so on to make money. Despite this, the athletes don’t earn a single cent. The NCAA claims the athletes are just students. However, they schedule tournaments that require the athletes so miss classes. Also, the NCAA states that the players must be committed to academic achievement and pursuit of a degree. Despite this statement, the players only need to maintain a 1.8 GPA for one semester to be eligible to play the rest of the season. Take Ben Simmons, One-and-Done athlete, into account. The One-and-Done rule is a rule in the NBA that stats payers have to be a year removed from high school to be eligible for the NBA draft. During this year, the prospects can train personally, play overseas, and play in the D-League, but playing in college would be the wisest decision. College gives the prospects most exposure to pro scouts. By playing this one year in college, the athlete risks injuries and it takes off a year of possible salary for them. Since the NCAA doesn’t pay their players, many are declaring for the draft possibly too early. This is to try and fix their financial issues. If the NCAA were to start paying their players, I believe many would stay a few extra years. This allows the player to be polished for the league and make ends meet.
